I was wrong

Bubu has a lot of people eating crow this year. I keep hoping some of his defensive intensity and hustle will rub off on some of the other players on the floor, but no luck...yet.

bubu.....leading by example. i , too, hope it catches on with the prima dona's

If Bubu isn't one of everyone's favorite Cyclones by now then those people don't fully understand what it means to be a Cyclone. He exemplifies the hustling underdog. There's always room for more of those.

I sure hope Bubu isn't paying tuition. He shouldn't be. There's no way you can justify giving Railey one and not Bubu.

We all know that Bubu is our best PG. He leads the team, doesn't turn it over much, brings us energy, and he's probably our best defender on the entire team.

But what I like the most about him is that he's not afraid. He reminds me of Jared Barnett in that way. When Barnett got his first start, I figured we'd see a nervous kid that looked a little lost and was afraid to throw the ball down the field, etc, but Jared wasn't afraid at all. He actually played with a ton of confidence. I see the same thing with Bubu. He's not afraid to drive the lane amongst the big guys and take it to the basket. He's not afraid to shoot the 3 when he has the open shot. He just doesn't look like a walk-on out there. Plays like a veteran scholarship player IMO.

Bubu has some improvement to make before he should go on scholarship. I have been in the Bubu camp for awhile, and think he will continue to improve to the point he will be competing for major PT, even when there are other pgs on the roster/

Have you been watching any of the games? He's already getting major PT.

And what is your idea of how good someone has to be to deserve a scholly? Does Railey deserve one?

I'm a Cyclone fan, so yeah, I hope Bubu's happy just being a walk-on his whole career so that we can use that scholly on someone else. But to say that Bubu hasn't "deserved" a scholly yet is way off base. He does. I'm not sure we win last night without Bubu? His defense and energy are hard to match. Plus he put the ball in his hands last night at the end of the game when Iowa was forced to foul. He went to the line 15 times! The guy is nails. He not only should be on scholarship, you can easily make the case he should be starting. We are a different team when he's on the court.

I think many knew Bubu would get PT and be in the mix at pg this year. I also believe he will improve enough this year, that in future seasons when there is more competition at pg, he will still see major PT.

You do not give up a scholarship unless you have to. Bubu is a hell of a Cyclone for not forcing the issue, especially this past off-season.

Doesn't matter if Bubu is getting scholarships for academics or not, as we found out with Paul Shirley. If you recall, Shirley came to school with a full ride engineering scholarship and walked on to the BB team. He ended up on an athletic scholarship whether the coach wanted him to or not. The NCAA is watching and if Bubu plays enough they feel he is a major contributor on the court, I think they can force him to at least count against the athletic scholarship total.

I think you are right. And that would just go to show how truly f'd in the head the NCAA is. They would basically be punshing us for having a smart kid with academic scholarships and making us use a bb scholly. Then with all the recruiting violations and kids accepting money etc., there are no repercussions at all. Oh no, Michigan or some other NCAA golden child might have to "vacate" victories from a decade ago. Nooooooo God please, not that. How will they ever recover?

GO CYCLONES!!!

I thought about starting a thread for the Bubu haters to eat crow... But I knew it would turn into a ******* match - like this. Good for you BryceC to admit he's a quality contributor.

I like Bubu and I think he can be a solid contributor but you gotta look at the competition he was playing against last night. I think some of us could of look sub-par against Iowa.

If someone not recruited to play sports for you attends the school on an academic scholarship and walks on, they will never count against you unless you put them on athletic scholarship. Shirley was at ISU on a full ride National Merit scholly, iirc. He was put on athletic scholarship because scholarship athletes also have other benefits walkons don't have like training table, I believe.

Remember Marc Urquardt?

As a player Bubu > Marc Urquardt , MD

Similar though ... academic scholarship, fan favorite, played hard both ends, but maybe not D1 talent straight out of HS. By senior year, playing A LOT.

Bubu was prob a recurited walkon. It is a fine line with the NCAA when a player get an academic ride but gets a lot of PT.

I don't believe a recruited walk-on can receive any scholarship money at all. Otherwise they count against your limit. I've posted on this in the past but am too lazy to look it up right now.

Not sure I agree with this quite yet since Urquardt played quite a lot his Sr year. But by the time Bubu gets there you may well be right. He's played more than Urquardt his first two seasons I would guess.
