That’s a rather twisted comment. Just take a look at the percentages. Lipsey has shown practice can improve his outside shot. Right now he is a 67% free throw shooter, that’s not good. Sometimes it’s a coaching philosophy. Is there time in practice where all they do is work on free throws? Are the players going in off hours and just working on free throws? I don’t know, but the results so far seem to indicate not in many cases.

Lipsey was a 75% (75.9) FT shooter last year.

So...are you implying you don't think a division 1 college basketball program sets aside time to work on free throws?

Free throws are a matter of repetition. Muscle memory. Watch our women’s teams from the past few years. They shot around 80% or higher as a team. They were so good they didn’t bother to put people around the key during the shots. I remember Chelsea Poppins who was a horrid free throw shooter as a freshman (62%). She worked hard at it. As a senior she shot 84% on 129 attempts. If men put in as much time on this critical component of the game they would net the same results.

There is probably some merit to this. I think it’s not as stressed in the Iowa State men’s program because that shows up even in the types of players we recruit.

That said, zero complaints about TJ, the players, or how they build their program.

There is a lot that goes into free throws. There is the general form, the consistency of said form, the mental aspect of shooting a free throw, variance of fatigue, home vs away environment, etc.

I think there is a decent chance some coaches have done better at getting their players to have more consistency in their routine of having a mental mindset, mechanics, and results than some others and also players who individually are better than others. But people attributing it to simply "practice" is fairly shortsighted.

With that said I think Tamin definitely has the ability to be much better than he has. But saying what exactly is missing...whether staff intervention, personal mindset, mechanics, etc. is tough to pinpoint. Were it super easy we wouldn't be having that problem.

Especially in a league with so much talent and so many guys who can hit threes, the other team hits a couple and you miss some free throws and suddenly a double-digit lead is gone. Happens fast!

Yep. One team gets to that do or die moment, amps it up and if the momentum shifts, the team with the lead tends to play a little tighter and the game becomes a lot closer.

If Gilbert and Curtis Jones play like that down the stretch this team has a chance to make a very deep run in March.

CJ was a huge factor in this W. Hopefully that breaks the camels back into him being more consistent, aggressive, and confident in his shot taking.
