If ISU could schedule KSU as non-conference, would you want them to?

I was thinking about Farmageddon (because duh?) and the fact that it isn't a protected rivalry. What would you think if ISU and KSU scheduled each other in years they don't play a conference game? I personally would love it, but can think of plenty of competitive reasons why it might not be the best choice.

Also, if you don't like that, what about scheduling closer "big" schools like Minnesota, Nebraska, Missouri, Illinois, instead of scheduling the yearly FCS and G5 opponent?

I would prefer to play K-State every year as a conference game, but since the Big 12 changed schedules I don’t necessarily want to schedule them as a non-conference game. With Iowa, we already play 10 games against power 4 opponents.

They're probably the closest thing we have to a rival in the big 12. They're one of the few schools we've played 100+ games against.

The big 12's scheduling priorities were out of whack. They focused on trying to make sure everyone played everyone as often as possible, but in reality college football is built on rivalries and history and they should have guaranteed more matchups.. Yes, there'd be some balance issues, but the whole thing is so unbalanced from year to year at this point anyway.

Many SEC schools play 4 patsies each year to get in the playoffs. Why would we want to play 2 P5s each year. Only if Iowa is off schedule and the also look T Minnesota or Nebraska.

Before Kansas State was off the schedule I’d bet most fans didn’t know and didn’t care about that.

I agree and think it should be a protected rivalry, conference game each year. Scheduling a conference opponent as a non conference game that somehow doesn’t impact conference record is just weird.

My preferred schedule would be moving the Cyhawk to every other year (every four years in each stadium), which would allow for some more flexibility in the off years to schedule some home and homes with other power 4 teams. I'd really like to see some games against teams like Minnesota, Nebraska, Missouri, Wisconsin, Illinois, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Purdue every once in awhile. I honestly kind of like the little bit bigger diversity in opponents in the expanded Big 12 so wouldn't want to schedule a conference team in the non-conference in years we didn't play them.

When the CyHawk goes away I think adding KSU on the off years would be fine. Either way, we are probably at most 5 years away from the B1G and SEC not playing ACC or Big 12 schools in the non con...

That's enough. It would be dumb if we didn't play the Kansas schools more often than UCF but or WVU but I always thought that was the plan. Since they aren't "protected rival" do we truly not play them more than any other team?

Almost all of those schools schedule at least one Power 4/ND game in the non-conference. Is there a reason they would rather play teams like Cal and Duke than Iowa State?

So it’s not the oldest rivalry and not even the oldest uninterrupted rivalry? It’s the 5th!?!

I would bet a lot of our fanbase doesn’t know this and I guarantee the rest of the country doesn’t care. It’s ok to not play them one year.

Even though I hit disagree, using the word most, I'm guessing you are right. It's a nice regional rival, old B8 school. JP dropped the ball when he didn't do them as a protected rival.IMO.

No. We need as many home game non con games as possible and I assume they aren’t willing to play all these games in Ames.

Also, gross. I hate them as a rival. We can do better in the new big 12.
