Surely you are joking. I'm not even convinced he is the best on this team. Hornacek, Halloway, Blaylock, Taylor, are just some that are leaps and bounds ahead of DG. Not an attack on DG, he gives his heart but talent wise no way he is 2nd best in ISU history. Not close.

Good grief no I'm not saying Dg is the second best PG in ISU history. I'm saying that even he were, Tinsley would be a huge upgrade. The gap between Tinsley and the second best (whoever that is) is pretty wide.

are you ********? He was pointing out that EVEN IF DG was second best ever he would have a long way to go to be as good as Tinsley. He was not at all saying DG is second best. His point was Tinsley is so far above any other guard we have ever had talent wise that it wouldn't even be close no matter who was number 2.

Exactly.

do you really think McDermott thought to himself, "screw Stinson and Blaylock! No way in hell I want to coach those two!"?

I don't want to sidetrack the thread, but I would love to know what happened. I have no way of knowing. It seemed to me that there was not a lot of interest from any of them. I hope McD did whatever was in his power to convince them to stay. I don't buy that it was an impossible task but rather, like many first year coaches, it was McD's first recruiting test. I don't claim to know. I am just not assuming it is all on the players either. Like I said in the original post, I wish they all would have given each other a chance. I think all of their lives would be better today.

who would it be?

I was thinking of which player would come in and make the most impact right away and help this team win.

I picked the Mayor for his leadership and shooting ability. I was really stuck between him and Tinsley.

Jeff Hornacek would be my first choice.
Excellent shooter on the perimeter and anywhere on the floor. Really superlative at the FT line. Finished his ISU career as the Big 8 career assist leader. Good defender.

Second choice would be Jamaal Tinsley. Not a good shooter, but the all-time best ball handler in the history of the conference. Gets in the lane and creates opportunities for team mates. Pushes the ball up the court better than anyone. Unorthodox defender, but effective.

Not one LaFester Rhoades? He worked for my company during the summer as a tuner. He kept the radio at the right station. And he smoked the hawkeyes for 50 some points. I'm dissappointed it hasn't been brought up. Barry Stevens, Grayer, Victor Alexander, Fizer, and Tinsley all are better choices than Stinson and Blaylok ever were. They are not even in the conversation.

This post only exists because of a glaring ommission (IMO). I agree with 95% of those before me...the answer is Tinsley (pretty easy, really)...but not just for offensive/"point guard" attributes.

Someone mentioned something (sorry, 3 pages ago so can't remember exactly) about Clemente. Tinsley made kids like Clemente look less than average. No way a kid like him (or Avery Bradley, Sharron Collins, Tweety Carter, 'what's his nuts' Singletary, etc) goes off for 30 points against JT.

More than likely, a kid like that goes straight to his dorm closet, thumb in mouth, questioning his manhood, or whether he even knows how to play the game anymore after playing opposite Tinsley for 40 minutes.

He played suffocating defense, talked a ton of trash (****, he used to laugh at those he was guarding) and just plain demoralized the opposing PG, which is almost as effective as being a great PG (which JT was).

Hell, for this team, my second choice would probably be Bankhead or Cato.

Jake Sullivan-Free throw shooting
Jamaal Tinsley: Pure PG..great defender

Tinsley. A close 2nd would be Willoughby or Hoiberg. A excellent 2 guard would also do wonders for this team.

First thought -- Tinsley. Should be able to make Brackins/Gilstrap/Ham? better.

Second thought -- Colvin's not bad. Maybe a great center so the defense can't double team Brackins? Do we have any great centers?

'Course -- everyone says college is all about the guard play.
