One way to look at things, and this is honestly the approach I think Hoiberg took, was the NBA was his dream but he loved ISU and saw a struggling program he wanted to help. Instead of making this his stepping stone, he knew he could put our school in a place that's successful, revive Hilton Magic, and turn this school into a program to be proud of. Now he's put our basketball in a perfect place to win a national championship, bring in recruits to a program that is great, and will always be willing to help a coach that he and JP think can keep the success going with. At first I felt used by now I think he did the perfect thing for this program while still being able to accomplish his lifelong goal. That is why, at least I, will consider him the greatest thing to happen to the ISU basketball program.

So more of a saint than a basketball coach? Can't remember the angels singing at the UAB game!

He was just a basketball coach and both parties got something out of the deal. Had he been able to commit long-term we would have taken the next step as a program but he had his own dreams and career goals which I heartily support.

I'm excited for Prohm and REALLY excited to see an influx of HIGH SCHOOL kids and watching them grow up before our very eyes!

Perhaps I was being naive, but I had settled into a comfort zone by assuming Hoiberg would be at ISU for at least a decade (if not career-long). What helped my catharsis: The period of speculation-to-reality was so lengthy, by the time it was officially announced that he was bolting for NBA, I already had accepted reality.

Will always be upset that Fred left, but also very thankful for the work he did here. Not many programs could lose a coach like him and sill widely be considered Final 4/National Championship contenders. I hope Coach Prohm has success and is loyal to the program, he and TJ seem to have a good start on the recruiting, a deep run this year would only help that!

*that being said... If Fred ever wanted to return to coaching at ISU, I would welcome him with open arms, figuratively and literally :twitcy:

I can't imagine ever being totally past it, but I think that Coach Prohm is going about it perfectly by just getting down to business, especially in the recruiting for that huge 2016 class. It seems like he knows what a big deal Fred is, and he's putting results together to speak for him.

Clearly a big 12 conference championship will do it for me. I remember a while back McKay saying something like its great to have a coach that wants to be here and I thought to myself, me too, me too. I think I remember too many stories about the ball boy thing, the mayor etc.and figured we finally got our guy and HE wants to be here, not so fast I guess. I know he never closed the door on the NBA, I get that but I think a few more years would have been fair. After all if not for ISU I doubt he be the Bulls coach now.

With Fred it is a case of what could have been. I was with some customers of mine from St Louis yesterday. They love Fred Holberg and enjoyed watching ISU bb. They like the style of play. Lets face it. Fred was a rock star. The national media loved him and when casual basketball fans (not ISU fans) know so much about him, then Fred Holberg is a house hold name. He was destined to be our coach K or our Tom Izzo. We even had a brand name for the style of basketball that was called Hoiball. He brought our program so much national attention. All of that is gone now. I think most of us are just disappointed because ISU was not a destination for him like it was for coach Orr. We wanted him to be our coach K. Fred didn't want that, nothing wrong with that of course but things could have been very special if he did.

I will never be over it. He handcuffed this team with his games he was playing with the Bulls. That deal was done for months I know it was. Really needed a transfer to help with depth. His messing around cost us a few guys we could have had. Thank goodness for TJ stepping in and being a real man about it. He Saved this season for us. Then him coming back and rubbing our noses in it was disgusting. I couldn't have been more upset. Standing there and telling us how grateful we should be because he blessed us with his presence was insulting. Telling us all of the other teams he tried to get and held us for ransom for it. I can't believe people take pictures with him at football games when he is here. I hope the Bulls lose every game. Can't believe he didn't learn from floyds mistake. Floyd is still suffering for that choice. I don't get worked up about money. I have turned down multiple job opportunities that paid way more money because I am loyal to my current situation. 2.5 million in Ames is an insane amount of money. Call me bitter if you want but if I could help my alma mater do amazing things and make 2.5 in the process. Sign me up and I will do it with a smile on my face.

You have some very valid points, and I agree with quite a few of them, but at some point you might want to let it go. Its better for your health. The process may have not been pretty but hes following a dream, not necessarily a paycheck like you are implying.
