And Iowa State would not be at the level we are without Steve Prohm. Didn’t think Prohm could destroy things so completely to be worse than Ken Trickey.
Hunter was a Prohm commit. I know Steve had his issues but he could recruit, was just terrible at everything else it seems.

TJ is actually a better recruiter. Prohm was given a completely loaded team and solid program. TJ was there to help Prohm the first year. But as Fred’s players left it was apparent that Prohm was not the answer.

From Stanz's article and the sign that a huge advantage TJ has is he knows what makes Hilton, Hilton, and is establiahing that as a sort of foundation.

“I know that fans here appreciate toughness, competitiveness, leaving it on the floor and giving your all and that’s what those young men did tonight,” Otzelberger said. “Certainly wasn’t our masterpiece. We’ve got a lot of things to get better at, but we’re hopeful that it’s a team effort. As we continue to play at a high-level and ultra-competitive basketball with toughness and aggressiveness, that it’s going to get our fans excited. It’s going to make Hilton the place that I know it is where nobody wants to come to play here because it’s the best venue in college basketball.”

It impresses me that only 2 games in this team looks like it has established roles and a rotation. After Fred’s guys left Prohm’s teams never had that. Especially the last 2 seasons where it seemed like he was randomly trying lineups. While this team has some limitations, particularly a lack of offensive skill in the paint, they look like a basketball team.

I think the fact that he’s been at Iowa State through two different staffs, that had two very different results, gives him perspective about the job no one else could have possibly had.

i also think DRob being on two staffs that failed so spectacularly also gives him perspective on pitfalls that need to be avoided here.

Kyle Green will end up being TJ’s biggest hire.

I appreciate he’s creating how his teams are going to play right out of the gate. Now the goal is to get more good players on the roster. In his career, the one thing he has proven is he’s an excellent recruiter, and has started well with his first class.

he’s going to win at Iowa State

I said that for a long time too.
But was he?

Hunter and Hali and Wigg, sure. Foster, in theory. But how many absolute misses?

Jakolby Long. T Lewis. Dubar. Blackwell. Simeon Carter.

And transfers, my dear god. Nixon. Javan johnson. Harris. Hans Brase. Beverly. Holden. Zoran Talley Jr.

So yeah he hit a home runs but then struck out like crazy. I begin to wonder if the home runs were pure dumb luck.

Just so glad its over.

You forgot the best one. THT. Plus you can't deny Nader and Burton completely turning a corner with him. Steve wasn't good, but he wasn't awful like people thought. I am fascinated with his collapse. Hoping some day Williams will let us know.

you’re right, of course, but he was here for one kind of filler year with prohm. Then he left, so I don’t really count that

he was an integral part of mcdermott’s and Fred’s staff though. He saw what each did with the program, what worked (Fred) and what didn’t (McDermott). That’s more of what I meant

Biggest thing i saw last night was we were able to overcome a extended period of scoring draught and still win

Also, no momentum killing timeouts after ISU went on a run and extended it's lead...and TJ actually called a TO to stop an OSU run.

Small things but they make a difference.

Another difference is that Brockington and Kalscheur are strong enough to finish when they get to the rim. Bolton was great at getting to the rim but not finishing.

Granted it's only been 2 games but you can already see a difference in coaching and in actual play...there's a different energy with the team and coaching staff and hopefully things keep improving as the season goes on, something that didn't happen the last couple of years.

I dont think it's some huge secret. He was a bad coach that got by on talent that made him look alot better his first 4 years. When that dried up after 2019 he was exposed.
It's far more nuanced than that. The Lindell thing, Lard, attitudes at the end, etc. I'm not trying to rewrite history. Steve had an undefeated season. Was that just luck as well?

I agree. I know it's a small thing, but watch the bench players react to good plays we make on the court. They are all in. Everyone.

Refreshing.

He was a bad in game coach who was bad at forming a culture and and didn't know how to implement things in games. He also couldn't recruit transfers or develop 90% of the players he got. It's pretty simple
