Why thanks. 2 spontaneous collapsed lungs when I was 21 within 3 months. It's rare, but not totally uncommon, especially for tall skinny young men. 5 days in the hospital after 3 weeks at my first job out of college. Oh, and chest tubes are unbelievably painful.

Hot dang. I had a collapsed lung in college though it was a result of trauma. The trauma, you ask? I was playing basketball and set a screen on somebody and he didn't stop running before he hit me. My lung popped like a balloon. Spent 10 days in the hospital for that pick. 0/10, would not recommend. Though it was during finals week my junior year, so I did get out of some tests.

I tell people that my chest tube scar is a bullet wound. Makes me feel like a badass.

I stupidly googled your thingy, and now I want to know what the problem was.

What compounded the problem was medication blocked a glandular duct in the area, which became infected, swelled, and I was bleeding through my skin, and the doctor couldn't fix it with several attempted in-office procedures. Let's just say I had a general idea of what it's like to be a woman for a few months...

Brain tumor @ age 43. Removal of an acoustic neuroma, fortunately it was benign.

Tonsilectomy
Cholecystectomy (laproscopic gallbladder removal - had to look up the formal name)
Vasectomy
Vasectomy reversal, because apparently she just HAS to have a fourth (and has even talked about a fifth)
Also had stitches a couple times from innocent-but-dumb injuries and a borderline 2nd/3rd degree burn in gradeschool that covered my left forearm. I was fortunate to not have any nerve damage or need skin grafts or anything, but had a bunch of Ping-Pong ball sized blisters. Today, 20-some years later, there is no significant scarring.

spontaneous? YOUR LUNGS CAN COLLAPSE SPONTANEOUSLY?! I mean, I thought pneumothorax was something bad but what, two of them? That is insane.

After googling I found out it wasn't a Dr. Seuss thing.

We've had LOTS of Cyclone fans face some amazingly difficult situations! A weaker fan base wouldn't live through some of our on-field performances.

Wishing continued (or regained) health to all! Especially the butt ones and the cancer ones! And the foot not being attached to the leg one. And the brain tumor ones and the popped balloon ones.... And the snickers lump next to your junk ones...

Wisdom teeth guys/gals? Childs play!

I was dead for about a week. Doctor Victor helped me by replacing some body parts and, with the right voltage, I was back to life. Worst experience ever. I think I was even semi-conscious for some of it. People in my village were not very accepting, but the people in Ames were great. After 15 years of speech therapy and 5 1/2 years of college (don't ask, I was a bit of a party monster), I can now read, speak, and write at a 9th grade level again. I would not recommend this experience to anybody.

I had a TON of stitches and scars, but at least I still have all my wisdom teeth! An unfortunate side effect is that since my re-awakening is that I now have an unexplicable fear of fire. Oh well, could have been worse.

I have torn my ACLs three times. Two in my right and one in my left, all by the time I was 18.

  • Tonsils & adenoids.
  • Adenoids AGAIN about 3 years later.
  • There's uncertainty in this thread if wisdom-teeth extraction qualifies. If so, yes. Two sessions, two teeth at a time — second procedure resulted in a dry socket ... pain was horrendous.

Pectus Excavatum: at 13 years old I had a deformity in my chest where it looked concave. My lungs and heart were being pushed up against the side of my body. It affected my breathing and as a track runner I received money from insurance for medical need rather than a cosmetic need, which is what pectus excavatum usually is for. Anyways, I had two incisions on both sides and metal bar run through my rib cage, and then the bar flips, causing the sternum and ribs to go outward and look normal. I spent 7 days in the hospital. The bar stayed in for 3 years and for the first 6 months I couldn't lift over 5 pounds, and the rest of the 2 and a half years I couldn't lift over 40.

Not much here:
(1) few oral surgeries including wisdom teeth,
(2) appendectomy
(3) bone marrow harvest.

Appendectomy and a wisdom tooth (I'll only count the first of four because it involved removing a piece of my jaw bone to get it out. Happened about 1960-61. He drilled a hole in the tooth and tried to crack it a mallet and chisel to get it out. Wouldn't break after many attempts from the left and right, so he took some of the jaw bone out to get at the tooth. I was awake for the whole thing and ended up with a swollen jaw, black eye, and incredibly sore neck for several days due to the pounding from the mallet. Aspirin wasn't much help.) The next three wisdom teeth removals were later in life -- partially due to my first experience -- with much better technology and were pieces of cake. They weren't as bad as root canals.

Not to go off topic but you can ask your kids /grandkids/Iowa fan the following: If they call removing your tonsils a tonsillectomy and they call removing your appendix an appendectomy, what do they call it when they remove a growth from the top of your head?

Answer: A haircut. <insert groan here>

I have side-by-side chest tube scars with a 8" incision scar right above them. I usually go with knife fight or shark attack.
