Is Next Year’s Team Honestly Going To Be Any Good?

Are you one of those hammering the lack of shooting from Young or Lard?

It means his value is implicit. He isn’t “just a spot up shooter” enough imo. Getting a more well-rounded player will help on defense and rebounding, but in regards to making the offense better, adding redundancy can limit efficiency when that redundancy is in the form of needing the ball.

Prior to the TT game Wigginton was shooting more 2FGs while making them at the same rate. That’s not more efficient or effective offense, no matter how much we know Wigginton is better at taking it inside the 3P line. It actually tells you how inefficient Wigginton is playing inside the arc to be shooting anywhere near the same percentage as DJ on 2FGs, and the opportunity cost that goes with it.

No.

It's just speculation at this point, but I think Shayok's diverse skill set on offense will make things easier for his teammates. That's Jackson's primary deficiency on offense. Despite being one of the best pure shooters in the country, he puts very little pressure on the defense.

"Needing the ball" is a pretty broad way to compare the two, but I guess that's the only way you could equate them.

So we're ignoring that Wigginton gets to the line way more than Jackson? Got it. Free throws are one of the most efficient plays in basketball even when only shooting 65%. Where on the court is Wigginton drawing those fouls?

Hines fetishes objective journalism to the extent that he sometimes comes off with a negative tone about the Cyclones. He doesn't show it, but just from a business standpoint he wants ISU to win, because happy fans are more likely to read articles. I think if he'd be the same for just about any team he was covering, even Wisconsin (his alma mater).

Sorry, not buying that at all. He doesn't fetishize objective journalism. He fetishizes his self-perceived superiority as a Sports Journalist. He is not objective. He's shown numerous times that he will take things out of context or embellish to antagonize Iowa State fans. Do you know what that is? A troll.

Just how many sources do you have for your statement? Is it double digit sources???

...I didn't think so

Wigginton, Shayok, and Lard are a legit trio. Them alone make this team a bubble team.

However in order to become a tourney lock or top 25 team, we are going to need 2-3 players to emerge. I think THT will be one. Talley has the tools but needs work on his jumper. Getting Lewis a legit off-season regimen could help him develop. Solo is what he is. Hoping Jacobsen is a more productive Brase. Zion, Tyrese, George, and Jakolby are all wild cards.

The depth is there, just hoping there’s talent with it and not just dead weight (see Iowa).

I knew this wasn’t going to be an easy season, but it’s become a disaster very quickly. We have two games where we look like world beaters then go back to looking like scrubs against Baylor and Texas Tech tonight. This brings me to my ultimate question: is ISU really good to be as good as everyone thinks next season? Sure, we get Shayok, but we lose Jackson and most of our lineup next season is going to consist of the same guys that can’t put together any sort of consistent string of games. Our players don’t seem to be making any strides during this season, and, if anything, we are looking worse as the season goes on. We have no bench, guys like Lewis seem like they won’t contribute at all. I’m starting to lose optimism in this team, especially for next season. If we are going to be good then guys like Zion Griffin and THT are going to have to be world beaters from day one. These guys can’t put together a solid 40 minutes anymore and it is beyond frustrating watching our guys play. What are everyone else’s thoughts on next season? I hope I’m wrong, I just don’t see us being any decent.

If you just watched the same 40 minutes as I did vrs Okie then you should probably edit your post. Prohm has had a helluva time putting together 5 healthy guys but has been very good at that this season. If the next class shows up healthy and in good condition then we will be ass-kickers next season so save some time off for March tourney travel in 2019 AND beyond!

I think Shayock is going to be awesome for us. But that tweet is saying its a very small chance that Marial is Iowa States best player.
If you look into the replies Hines compares Shayock to a Clyburn/Nader type that plays defense. Clyburn was the best player in that team and Nader was the second best player to Niang. Pretty damn good imo.

I don’t think we’ve figured out how to best utilize him, but Talley can be a significant contributor on a good team. He’s an athletic 6’7 or 6’8” with great length that can defend all over the court and handle like a combo guard. I feel as though he’s the type of asset you see an elite team have when watching the later rounds of the tournament.
You can see in today's game how versatile Talley is on defense. He can guard 1-4, rebounds well, doesn't hurt you on offense and accepts his role. Talley off the bench on next year's team really adds to flexibility of going small or big.

We have no idea on OU, Young has not allowed other players to excel.

It's funny, but from what I've seen I like OU's players from a demeanor standpoint, and from I've seen of Young (didn't see today) I feel bad for the teammates that may not be able to expand enough to help the team in a way that leads to a decent tourney run.

I have always been a Kruger fan (as much as you can be for opposing coach) I was not impressed with this team of his. They are nothing besides T Young. They were horrible when he was on the bench. Wonder if Lon is getting tired of coaching, this isn't his best work.

Talley is super long I’ve really been impressed with him as he gets back to full fitness. His handle is really good for his size as well.

For all we know Young may be really high maintenance and Kruger may have his hands tied on how to best work with the rest of the team...it's not like there wasn't good young talent there last year.

I've seen Young get a little weird when someone else brought the ball up and such.
