Is there a bigger loser in conference realignment than Mizzou?

Nobody ever talks about it but why not add Louisville anyways to stay at 11. Big 10 did it for years and it seemed to work fine.

Because the next TV deal is probably going to "incentivise" the Big 12 moving back to 12 or even 14. And 11 is actually a ridiculous number because you are caught in no-man's land - too many teams to do a true round robin (10 of your 12 games in football and 20 basketball games would need to be devoted to it - not going to happen) and not enough teams to get the championship game.

And no, it really didn't work that well for the Big 10 all those years. It was always awkward for the conference schedule-wise both in basketball and football, and the basketball tournament was unbalanced and also awkward. The only reason why they went ahead with it was because they wrongly assumed that Notre Dame was eventually going to join the conference, pushing them to 12. It was never the Big 10's intent to stay at 11.

Guess we will not see much missouri sports on TV starting next year.

Really? Are you serious? The SEC TV contract makes the Big XII contract look like Looney Toons? ESPN is all over the SEC in football and doesn't exactly kick them to the curb during Basketball season. Time to get out of the midwest.

I think it is a horrible move, just because of logistic. It is hard to believe that I am the only person that sees that sending the tennis team by air to Florida looks more costly than a Van to KU or Ames. Their closest road trip will now be longer than almost all of the Big 12 road games. Multipy this times 14 or 15 teams, of which 12 produce little or no revenue and it is really going to look stupid.

Hey Rand-McNally, buy a map. The only real distance trade off is FL. Arkansas is only about 3 hours away. Vandy is only about 5--about the same distance as Ames. And oh, by the way, if you're making more money, who cares if the flight is 1hour or 1hour and 15 minutes?

Wow. Great deductive reasoning.

Missouri in the SEC has 2 opponents close to them, one of which is in their division.

Missouri in the Big 12 had 5 opponents close to them (ISU, KU, K-State, OU, OSU).

Oh, and TV revenues after contract renegotiation project the Big 12 to be making more $$$ than the SEC and their 20-some-odd year deal.

Looks to be equivalent to me...

Again, my geographically challenged friend, pull out a map. Ole Miss is maybe 5 hours away. And the miles are not the issue, this decision was based on $$$'s. The new TV contract is estimated to pay SEC members $25 million each. End of story.

Yes, MIZZOU is flushing their KC fan base and those folks are not very happy, and yes, MIZZOU may regret this decision...but please, geography had nothing to do with it. Ego and $$$ did. And being a MIZZOU grad, I can tell you, Columbia has more in common with Oxford than it does with Ames.

Shortest distance from Columbia, MO to:

Fayetteville, AR: 5 hours, 28 minutes
Nashville, TN: 7 hours, 22 minutes
Oxford MS: 7 hours, 44 minutes
Lexington, KY: 7 hours, 41 minutes
Starkville, MS: 9 hours, 21 minutes
Knoxville, TN: 10 hours, 17 minutes
Tuscaloosa, AL: 10 hours, 19 minutes
Auburn, AL: 12 hours, 31 minutes
Baton Rouge, LA: 12 hours, 21 minutes
Athens, GA: 12 hours, 42 minutes
College Station, TX: 13 hours, 18 minutes
Columbia, SC: 14 hours, 41 minutes
Gainesville, FL: 17 hours, 9 minutes

Keep in mind your division mates are Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida, most of which are furthest away from you.

Why do I need a road atlas when I have Google Maps?

I am sure the typical southern locale fits you just fine.

Yeah, when I left PA 20 years ago I gave my snow shovels to my neighbor and told him I never planned on living someplace where I would need them again. As they say, the North won the war, but the South got the weather. After 20 years in Ames I was done with Winter. I assume that is what you mean...unless there is something more arrogant intended in your reply.

Time for me to be the grumpy old man--this what is wrong with society today. Try actually DRIVING to these places, as I have....google maps is nice for spying on your former girlfriend, but not too good for how long it actually takes to drive from point A to point B. When I was in school...yes, a million years ago...my fraternity brother and I drove from Columbia to Nashville in under 6 hours...just to watch ISU lose to Vandy during the Jim Criner era I might add.

Really? Because Google Maps says that the trip from Sterling Heights, MI (where I live) to Davenport, IA (where my parents' live) takes 7 hours and 46 minutes. We typically leave around 10:00 a.m. Eastern and typically arrive around 5:00 p.m. Central. Guess what? That's 8 hours. Put another tally in the Google Maps win column...

I'm pretty sure the Columbia Chamber of Commerce would wince at that remark. Holy insult to the city!

Uh....no, I don't think so. Columbia, MO is like a little piece of MS that broke off and drifted North. My fraternity house at MIZZOU was a field hospital for the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Enough said.

Not exactly sure.
When I have seen the SEC commercials, I have seen the Tammy one many times. I have yet to see one talking about Missouri joining. Am I the only one that hasn't seen one about Missouri? Doesn't sound like the SEC thinks this is too big of a deal.

Will always be known as number 14.
