Something that could be fun for the future is once we get our entertainment district going is we have a KC Power and Light type of festive gathering for our away football games. (Think of Big 12 basketball tournament gathering) could become a source of added revenues for the athletic department, and a great time too.

I am shocked he didn't mention the $70 season tickets that ISU sells and compare them to the lowest priced ticket at other schools.
I compared the tickets to the ones that would be equal to where I sit, the $70 dollar tickets you are talking about are for kids. For that price you get a ticket to sit on the North grass areas on the ground. I parent ticket costs $199 in that area,

2021 Season Ticket Pricing:

  • Reserved Priority Seating - $599
  • Faculty & Staff/Letterwinners – $550
  • Lower/Upper Reserved – $399
  • South End Zone Upper Level – $275
  • Cyclone Mobile Pass - $249
  • Jr. Cyclone Club Parent Pass - $199
  • Jr. Cyclone Club Membership - $69
ISU is not selling any $70 dollar season tickets to the general public, another Iowa myth laid to rest.
When I say the general public I mean to adults, not kids 2-15.

No way that is happening now.

Here are some numbers I crunched concerning attendance.

We would rank 8th in attendance in a 16 team Big 10
We would rank 2nd in attendance in a 16 team PAC 12.

We rank 21st nationwide in football attendance . Iowa is 20th. We out-attend 16 of the current 26 teams in the Big ten and Pac 12.

Versus big ten teams:

10% more than Purdue
45% more than Indiana
45% more than Illinois
58% more than Maryland
59% more than Northwestern
99% more than Rutgers (read twice as many)

Versus Pac 12 teams

11% more than Oregon
21% more than Arizona State
21% more than Colorado
51% more than Arizona
61% more than Stanford
28% more than Utah
36% more than UCLA
40% more than California
84% more than Oregon State
And 109% more than Washington State

So can it be assumed that Iowa State has an equivalent percentage more fans than these? If so then Iowa States streaming value is more valuable than all of them.

And let's say you're starting the Big ten from scratch. Can someone make a case that Northwestern by itself is somehow much more valuable than Iowa State is? Yeah they're in the Chicago market but nobody cares. In other words Chicagoinites aren't watching. Rutgers? Same

Since cable isn’t as big a deal now and since streaming is it would seem that the number of fans a team has is the more important thing these days.

Also...Iowa State is 3rd in national women’s basketball attendance. Iowa is 10th. They would be 1st in the big 10. And ahead of Iowa as they would be 2nd.

Iowa State is 15th in national mens basketball attendance. Iowa is 23rd. They would be 6th in the big 10. Iowa would be 8th.
we have a lot higher attendance than Minnesota too. How come Minnesota is not on the list above?

The board of regents would tell him to gtfo if he tried to get approval for that right now.

I know change scares people. Just remember change is an opportunity to make things better. Most of our lives is spent with status quo being the norm. It is only if things change that things can be improved. We are faced with change at this time. We have the right man that is leading us down this path. Don’t assume just because we are changing it is going to definitely get worse. It is going to be different. Also it is going to be what we can make it. I like our chances.

Now do the same breakdown and look into the cost of tickets at each venue, including seat licensing fees that are required for each.

Good idea. But I have a day job. ha. And don't know where that information would be readily available. The attendance figures are and it doesn't take long to do some calculations.

From there you can go into the address line and just change the year you want to see and it comes up as well. I wish they were in spreadsheet form because if that was the case then you could copy and paste and do all sorts of work very easily.

So here's a few more stats showing what's happened over the last 10 years.

Change in average attendance for FBS games from 2019 to 2009

All FBS games Down 10.3% (41,477 in 2019 compared to 46,281 in 2009)

Iowa State Up 29.3% (59,794 in 2019 compared to 46,242 in 2009)

For all Big 10 games since 2009 - Down 9.3%

For all Pac 12 games since 2009 - Down 15%

For all Big 12 games since 2009 - Down 8.6%

Change in average attendance comparing 2019 to 2009 for Iowa State and Big Ten teams

Iowa State + 29.3%

Illinois - 38.6%
Rutgers - 38.3%
Maryland - 14.3%
Michigan State - 9.3%
Minnesota - 9.1%
Iowa - 6.7%
Wisconsin - 4.5%
Ohio State - 2.1%
Indiana - 1.4%
Penn State - 1.1%
School up north - 2.3%
Nebraska + 4.0%
Purdue + 7.1%
Northwestern + 56%

Same since 2009 for Pac 12 teams

Iowa State + 29.3%

UCLA - 31.9% (WOW)
USC - 30% (WOW)

So stopping here for a second. Think about that. Two historic, and PAC-12 marquee programs, like USC and UCLA have BOTH seen their attendance drop by 30% while Iowa States has grown 30%. And Iowa State also outdraws them in absolute terms by 36% more than UCLA while we're equal to USC.

California - 29%

And another near 30% drop for another California team. So how's that multi-million-people-population-TV-market thingy working out for them???

Arizona - 24.8%
Oregon State - 23.2%
Stanford - 10.7%
Oregon - 7.8%
Arizona State +1.2%
Colorado + 2.3%
Utah + 2.9%
Washington + 6.0%
Washington State + 10.1%

All this makes me wonder if Iowa State wouldn't be near the top, if not the top itself in attendance growth in the whole of NCAA. But that would take awhile.

There are lots of other things that are considered of course, but based on this and other attendance stats they should be begging Iowa State to join them in order to prop up the obvious declining interest in their product!

Duh!
I have to believe JP and team have assembled a very thorough and compelling pitch plan to share with media partners and conferences. If not, he knows where to find me.

So a quick eyeball only comparison of the lists from 2009 and 2019 shows these teams as the programs with the largest percentage growth over that period.

This is their percentage growth and their 2019 average attendance. Iowa State is 6th. Only one of the top 6 teams has a larger 2019 attendance figure. So the other 5 began with much lower numbers than Iowa State did.

Temple +69% (29,460)
Northwestern +56% (37,736)
Louisville +54%% (49,913)
Memphis +52% (38,816)
Texas A & M +32% (101,608)
Iowa State +29% (59,7984)

4 of the five started with lower figures.

And as far as TV viewership goes if you did a five year average including last year ISU would be up around 1 mil. So probably around 30-35 considering year over year viewership for CFB was down 30%. If the overall CFB downward trend continues while ISUs viewership stays high this year ISU should be pushing to be a top 25 in viewer Over the rolling 5 year average.
Going to be top 25 in attendance again.

Tough for the trolls, ISU fatalists and media that are biased and have at best a superficial understanding of TV viewership and attendance to swallow, but ISU is more valuable than they understand. There will be lots Of people surprised when ISU eventually ends up in a power conference.
