Feel like it could have been higher, but happy to be ranked at all. Super pumped overall with the start to the season. On to a tuneup game on Wednesday followed by a couple of challenging games.

UNC dropping 17 seems a tad harsh if you think about it....if people think we're good enough to be ranked then by that logic it shouldn't be that bad of a loss for UNC. Especially when their other loss was 4 OTs to a ranked team.

They really haven't played well in November. Got a scare from Gardner Webb before the PK85. Opened with an unconvincing win over UNC Wilmington.

I say all that not really disagreeing that they didn't "earn" the preseason #1 ranking. Essentially returned the entire roster from a national championship runner up team. Traded out Manek for Pete Nance.

And Alabama went up 7 spots.

That’s a fairly strong argument for being #1 early. Stronger than most anyone else would have

I feel like Kenpom has risen to the level where the AP and coaches polls are meaningless. It won’t be long until you see games on TV with Kenpom rankings instead of AP/Coaches rankings.

I don't even care what the voters think for basketball. The analytics are stronger than the voters (KenPom, Torvik, ESPN BPI, etc., there's a dozen of them) and their "eye test." Basketball also has enough of a sample size and cross-pollination between conferences that valid comparisons are easy in those models.

Football is different and is always going to be inherently arbitrary because the sample size of games is so small and the cross-pollination between conferences and the best programs in the country is so limited. Basketball is nice that the "power" programs actively seek each other out for early-season games.

Iowa State is #35 on Torvik filtering out any preseason effects. I think that's fair.
