Why Iowa fans are liars when they say the game doesn't matter to them:

I don't think it is either team's superbowl. ISU just came out more fired up and ready to play yesterday and that showed. You guys had us beat in every aspect of the game besides turnovers and field goals. I wish Iowa played like this was their superbowl. Maybe we'd lose less games to Iowa State.

With a huge grin on his face, CPR said, "because it happened THIS YEAR." Then he (and the rest of the room) had a big laugh at it.

I might be incorrect, but I think he actually said "because it happened today."

Either way, he was making the point that, obviously, less than an hour after winning a 3-OT rivalry thriller, this win obviously seems bigger than NU & UT wins.

It's just a **** poor excuse to pass their bad feelings off in misdirected manor. It's the little kid mentality of saying, "We weren't trying, or I didn't want to win anyways, that's why you won." It's as ridiculous of a statement as the thought of this game actually not meaning anything to Iowa players. At the very least, you should realize it's a big game and get up for it. Because in the end, it's going to be a loss on your record. They can sluff it off however they wish, but at the end of the day, it's a statement that just makes them look more idiotic for having said it.

Super bowl or not, it doesn't really change the fact that they lost, and that we really did look like the better team on Saturday. Anyways, I can distinctly remember the Iowa team running through our bench to reclaim the Cy-Hawk trophy just as enthusiastically as we did to their bench yesterday. In 2006, and in 2008, and in both instances this happened right in front of me.

Poor Iowa fans just have to realize that this game matters equally for both teams--I love the sentiment that the Big XII is what really matters (and I suppose that would be the same down the Iowa lane for the Big 10), but the state obviously cares about this game and Iowa fans obviously do too. Nice post, CyFan61. Equal time for practice and equal results. They can go back to wanting to fire Ferentz now.

This.

This will be considered "ISU"s Super Bowl" until ISU sustains winning seasons. Many times we have won the game only to see a sub-par year the rest of the way. That's why Iowa fans say this. ISU goes 3-9, 5-7, 7-7, but beats Iowa. Must be their Super Bowl. We need to beat teams we should, UCONN, KU, KST, teams like this. Then I think the Super Bowl talk may go away.

I agree emphatically. The S-Bowl claim sprang from just such occasions ... 1980, '81, '82, '02, '07. Because Iowa had better overall seasons in those cases, it made it appear Iowa State put more emphasis on the rivalry game than anything else, and that Iowa didn't — even though multiple factors could be considered. Some of it could be counted as coincidental.

The first game in the modern series could have been called "Iowa's Super Bowl" for a similar reason.

As you said, ISU needs to consistently beat KSU, Missouri (UConn, definitely, this season) and other big games, frequently, in the conference, as well as Iowa.

But the idea that ISU has, over a 30-year span with several coaches, completely different players and varying strengths of individual teams, cares only about winning the Iowa game ... I don't buy it.

I feel like even if we do better with other games... we'll still hear this tired excuse.

It was a great game, and one that any fan of football would have loved to see.

One thing is for sure, I've had to stay away from the Hawkeye message boards for the past 24 hours. Ridiculous. I don't like my favorite teams losing, but the garbage some of those select few spew out really ********.

I was at the game, and the amount of class shown on both sides was something I haven't experienced at a rivalry game like that before. I was at the Iowa-ISU game a few years ago in Ames, and drunk beligerent ******** on both sides took away from a lot of the fun. But even in the student lots, fans of both teams tailgated, drank, and enjoyed the atmosphere together.

Great game.

Don't let the ****** popsicles get under your skin. They have to rationalize it however they can, because Iowa football is all they live for, and if they lose to a perceived lesser opponent, then it's like an attack on their personal life.

This should be a lesson to ALL fans that one game is one game, and while you may not like the outcome, there is always another week. Just like the ISU people on here who were near suicide after the UNI game, these same doomsdayers and negative tools on the Iowa side will be popping chubbies after Iowa's next good game.

Regardless of who thinks it's who's Super Bowl, you'd better match the intensity of your opponent or you're going to be in for a long day unless you have just a massive talent advantage. And Iowa does not have a massive talent advantage over ISU, nor does ISU over Iowa.

+1...I feel like the "Super bowl" excuse is just a hidden way of Hawk fans saying, "we're actually better than you, but you just tried harder than us today." If that's true, it stinks to have a team that doesn't give 100% effort whenever they play some opponents.

I've always thought that if calling this game, "ISU's Super Bowl", is the best smack talk they got.....well.....then they ain't got much.
I think we're sitting ok.

Of course this is a huge game for us. Its our in-state rival. Its a heated passionate rivalry. I would argue that it IS the most heated passionate game on our entire schedule. Whats wrong with that? It just so happens that our biggest rival isnt in our conference. Unfortunate but it is what it is.

Well boys and girls, from 1979 until hayden fry got fired by bob bowlsbuy... Iowa State was "Iowa's Super Bowl" !!!!

Every spring ball good old haydingy would have his offense run ISU plays against his defense so they could recognise our plays well in advance of normal...

Good old haydingy was obsessed with beating iowa state and the best day of my life came in sept 1998 when Danny Mac beat the old buzzard and sent him packing back to texass!!!!!

Dont look now but we are eight wins and six losses in the last 14 years...

If it's just our super bowl, why are they always so vocal about losing compared to us. I think most ISU fans take the loss for what it is. We got beat. Seems to me it bothers Iowa fans a lot more than it does ISU fans. I mean you think if we just lost the Super Bowl, you'd hear a lot more from us. Seems the opposite way around to me.

I would trade a win over Iowa this year, for any Big12 team except Kansas.

It's fun to rub it in to Iowa fan for a little while, but in reality Iowa isn't some college football superpower, they're a middle of the pack Big10 team.

Middle of the Pack ?

The sporting news college football edition picks the squawks 4th in a six team division....

These squawkeyes are gonna get real tired of eating Nebraska's dust for the forseeable future....It will be Grate er GREAT to see the Car Wreck of football season after football season unfold.

Hey, the Hawks had an extra week to prepare for this game. I can't believe they put hardly any time in to beating Tenn. Tech, they were probably preparing for Iowa State that whole time.

Props to tm3308 for rational comments in that thread on HN. At least he realizes and accepts that ISU was the better team yesterday. He's always a good, fair poster here. He could easily be a Hok D-bag over there, but he chooses not too.

Yup. He's one of the good ones.
