Putting this out there just because I was curious and made some quick calculations:

If you look at message count on this message board (5.2%); if you look at traffic on my bracket generator site (9.6%); if you look at tv ratings for the 2021 NBA playoffs vs WNBA playoffs (12.9%); if you look at ratings for the 2021 sweet 16 Women's vs Men's (7.1%) -- WBB engagement hovers around 10% of MBB engagement.

I was a little shocked at how high the WNBA number was, but it helps that the WNBA playoffs aren't as endless as the NBA playoffs.

Where to start ...

-- We staffed two writers at both Big 12 Tournament games and one at the NCAA Tournament. Two with the men. We only have three full-time employees.

-- It's important to point out that Connor, our newest full-time employee, is partly dedicated to women's basketball. I can assure you that financially, from a business standpoint only, we would be wise to use those resources elsewhere as much as I love it, women's basketball does not generate the interest that football and men's basketball do. It's just a fact. It's the same with wrestling.

-- We have had a writer dedicated to women's basketball since 2010, when I took over here. We have paid these writers and I promise you, have lost significant money in the process. We do it to support the women's program, that I love so very much and have worked my ass off to promote over the years.

-- Connor is going to Greensboro on Wednesday for the entirety of the next two rounds and hopefully will be in Minneapolis too. I'd like to see another free fan site in America sending writers half way across the country to cover women's basketball. (Again I believe it is important to do so we are doing it. BUT most publishers and business owners do not, and won't choke down the loss).

-- We have a bi-weekly podcast dedicated to the women, which of course touches on other things too. But the basis of the podcast when we created it was to give an extra boost towards women's sports at Iowa State.

-- A few other notes ... This past weekend, we did an NCAA Tournament preview show. Billy Fennelly joined us. On Sunday, we did a Round of 32 preview show. Jamie Steyer-Johnson joined us. On last night's show, an entire segment was dedicated to the women.

On top of that, here are links to every story we have done ONLY in the postseason.

By my count, that is 23 pieces of content since the start of the Big 12 Touranment.

That doesn't count the one-on-one podcast that I did with Bill Fennelly before the start of the tournament. He also joined me on my KXnO show, where I talk about this team constantly.

It's just funny to me that I wake up today getting "thank you for your coverage" texts from the program and read this on our free message board.

Whatever though. You have a right to your opinion, and I do mine. I challenge you to find another fan site in America that covers women's basketball as much as we do.

Hey judging by this thread and the amount of attention it has gotten this is your chance @acoustimac! Strike while the iron is hot and drum up some threads for us women’s basketball fans.

I've been more into ISU women's ball this year than ever, and that is thanks to the content I read here at CF. I am aware of no other fan site like this that even makes the effort.

This will probably be seen as unfair: I'm a lifelong--but casual--Chicago sports fan, and when the Cubs and Blackhawks got good, many of the fans that were through the wringer with those teams over the years sort of resented the attention and fresh fan support that came with it. They understood better what it all really meant. They were true fans compared to those that had just come along lately. It's a thing. While one would think they would be the happiest that the team was beating expectations, they weren't. It may seem harsh or unfair but I wonder if that doesn't happen here with coverage of the women's game. Because what you get here is plainly better than elsewhere with respect to women's ball.

There are three teams with men and womens's teams advanced this far, ISU, UNC, and Michigan. Michigan's Rivals and 247 sites have no dedicated forum and no topics in the main basketball forum related to women's ball under discussion. Carolina's 247 page has a forum for women's ball that is pretty well trafficked, but only gets about 3% of the discussion that the two men's boards get. Here that's more than three times as much at 10%. And the UNC news section only had a brief wire report of their women making the Sweet Sixteen with no prior coverage of them in the NCAAs at all.

If the coverage you get here strikes you as inadequate, I don't know what to tell you.

Is timing a factor on the NBA / WNBA item? They would NOT be in direct competition I believe with the WNBA in the late summer / fall.

Maybe posters changed their rating since it was brought up, but I was expecting a lot more "dumb" ratings than four.

Hi, Steph Copley here. I co-host the Title IX pod on the CycloneFanatic feed every other week. If you've ever listened, you know I'm extremely sensitive to the disparity in treatment and coverage of women's sports. And you’re right, women’s basketball is generally under-covered as a sport, and it sucks. But everyone at CF, Chris especially, has made an effort to make sure that’s not the case with this Iowa State squad.

Chris was gracious enough more than two years ago to give Alisa and I platform to highlight women’s sports. We don’t take that lightly--we’ve devoted the majority of our time on the Title IX pod to coverage of the women’s team since the season began. Billy Fennelly joined us earlier in the season.

Connor Ferguson has been covering the women’s team all year. He live tweets the games and does game previews and game recaps—just like Chris and Jared do with the men’s team. I know Chris and Blum spend time talking about the women during every episode of their Sunday night podcast, too. And on Sunday, Jamie Steyer Johnson joined the CF team during the pregame show to discuss the women’s match-up against Georgia.

Is CF’s coverage of the women’s team 100% equal to that of the men? No, it isn’t. That’s the unfortunate reality of limited time and resources. But CF has gone out of its way to make sure these ladies are getting the attention and recognition they deserve.

So, as someone who appreciates your message and is also sensitive to inequities of men and women’s sports, I can honestly say I’m proud of the coverage CF has and will continue to give to this special squad. Go Cyclones.
CF goes well above and beyond the rest of the industry when it comes to dedicating resources and covering to women's sports.

Tittle IX podcast is one of the very few out there.

Buick has been running a campaign dedicated to raising awareness and interest in women's sports. It's a problem nation wide.

It would be nice to get them to sponsor some of CF's work. Or at the very least shine a spotlight on the thriving support ISU gives to their women athletes. Because, as skimpy as it may seem at times, ISU is still one of the best in the nation.

Seriously, this is a great time for you to be participating in the WBB discussion. Don't worry about all the folks who over-react.
I could make some great points related to the original topic, but I don’t want banned from the site due to misunderstandings that have already appeared.

Nobody is going to ban you, man. You made a post. I responded to it with my thoughts and some insight on our coverage. We're all adults here.

I'm still not sure what to think about these types of arguments. Is it fair that my baseball team stinks and spends no money while others spend (and win) more? No. But until MLB forces it, I'm sol. Is it fair that bowling and tennis aren't as popular as football and thus I get to see less? eh, either way I have to look harder to find those if I want. I think in the real world gender equity matters but sports and entertainment aren't real IMO. They are a consumer market driven solely by what people want. A girl should be able to play basketball at school, but I don't think Lisa Leslie deserved LeBron money just because she too was the best. To me its no longer gender equity but product popularity. I would say CF does better than I'd expect and better than the money would dictate. Kudos to them for trying.

I appreciate being able to come to this site for WBB coverage. Serious thanks to Chris and all.

And I rarely post, but I genuinely appreciate those who do. Acoustimac, I’ve been reading your posts for years, through the best and worst of times.

Right now, I am a little obsessed with this Cyclone team. For this fan, at least, there is never enough. Go State.

All being adults is purely speculative. Being older than 30 usually bring criticism on this site.

Seems like an over-reaction. Apparently, this is a thread for over-reaction. Do you really think that CW's response puts you at risk of a ban? It seems to me that he just returned your volley with a slam. If there are misunderstandings that deserve clarification, address them. If they don't deserve clarification, ignore them.

There are plenty of us who welcome your contributions. Just put a few others on your "ignore list" and things will be much better. Or just post and functionally ignore them. Or not. It's your call.

IMHO people are misunderstanding how attention is generated. It's both the product and the coverage. My take on Acoustimacs comments are that the product is there in a BIG way and deserves more coverage. More coverage would generate more attention. Chris commenting in a womens basketball thread generated more interactions than the women advancing to the sweet sixteen. It literally proves the point. People have said his mentions during William's and Blum has driven more interest.

Ashley has a legitimate argument to being the greatest to ever do it here, more articles focused on that will lead to more awareness leading to more attention leading to more articles (again, as Acoustimac said beyond CF, this is only a mild criticism of CF and more of a general frustration) and on and on it goes. Not the crowd, not asking the players if they noticed the men won (that interview was realllly bad). But the accomplishments of this team, Ash, the next matchup, whatever.

Caitlyn Clark is damn near a household name in Iowa. That didn't happen just because she scored 30 points a few times. It happened because those 30 point outings were covered by the media. It goes hand in hand, and some of the coverage of Iowa State Womens basketball does hold it back (that interview being a great example).
Caitlin Clark name in Iowa has a ton more to do with the fact that she was from the metro where the major media is located. Ashley has always drawn the short straw just because she is from the eastern side of the state.

I agree, media coverage matters. That coverage when paired with a special talent, story, or season can be really powerful.
