We've been cold here in the PNW too. Our heating bill for November was 4X bigger than our October bill. I'm scared to see what it will be for December. Our houses aren't built for single digit overnight lows!

What kind of heating do you use?

Gas forced air. We do have a wood burning fireplace but the previous owner blocked it and it hasn't been a priority to get it back into working order.

We normally don't get below freezing (rain, not snow). Furnaces are relatively small by midwest standards, less insulation, and often no AC since we're usually between 40F and 80F for 350 days per year.

My most recent heating bill was $130 and I crank it so that I’m always comfy. Maybe I’m in for a surprise next month.

It’s so cold out…

I saw a lawyer with his hands in his own pocket

Frigid Factoids

  • Seawater freezes at 29°F.
  • Because mercury freezes at –38°F, alcohol is used in thermometers in colder zones. It freezes at –173°F.
  • Fifty to 70 percent of body heat is lost through the top of your head, but only if the rest of your body is covered up.

Our house is a 1-1/2 story, like 3600sf total so about 2200sf main floor. The furnace is in the garage and the hot air has to run the length of the house with all the ducts in the crawl space and minimally insulated.

Most of the time it doesn't matter, but during extended cold snaps it gets expensive. I think out last bill was like $240 and it was $60 the prior billing period.

The tire pressure sensors don’t register. Three tires with 30 psi and the other with - -. I was like oh F! Good thing it is good on pressure. Just that it’s-10 out and you may have a flat tire.

It's so cold that it was a Three Dog Night. (The band's now-famous name refers to native Australian hunters in the outback who huddled with their dogs for warmth on cold nights; the coldest being a “three dog night”.)
