TJ understood the assignment - the team needs more and better shooters. And they've added Milan, Hamilton, Gilbert, Pav (and Jones?) - all of whom should be 36%+ 3pt shooters and can score off the dribble. The offense should be about a million times better next year
I haven't heard anything about Jelani Hamilton, other than he was a good player that we likely only had a shot at due to family ties to ISU. What kind of player is he?

He is a shooting guard. From what I have seen, good shooter, which is his best skill. Can drive a little bit. Good length. More of a finesse player right now. Will need to add strength, tighten up his handle a bit, and work on his defense. Has the tools to help once he develops. My guess is that his level of commitment on defense will determine if he plays early. The shot should translate.

Because I'm really high on Pav, I wanted to look into this a bit. On the surface, freshman AJ Green is a really good comp.

Just raw numbers, Pav went 15/4/3, Green went 15/2/3. Pav was more efficient as a shooter, but especially inside the arc where he made 54% vs. 46% for Green. Also was about 4 points better from three 39% vs 35%. Green was definitely more of a volume shooter from 3, though, taking quite a few more than Pav - 8 threes per 40 for AJ vs. 4.3 for Pav.

That's one of the things that stands out in the numbers, Pav did a lot more work inside the arc than you'd expect just looking at him in the lineup or something. His free throw rate would have led ISU this year (not taking into account Eli or Conrad). He made more than anyone on ISU took this year!

Back to the Green comp, Pav and Green had similar assist and turnover rates, similar rebounding rates. Overall though, most any attempt at an overall offensive metric really likes Pav. Higher BPM and OBPM, higher ORTG, (much) higher PER. Granted, MVC > SoCon, so who can really say. My guess is that Pav likely does more from outside the arc this year than he did in the SoCon, but who knows. He played well against TA&M and LSU, didn't seem like they immediately took that part of his game away.

Does this mean anything? IDK, but it does make me feel even better about my thinking that Pav has a really high ceiling as a college player, and I'm stoked that's at ISU.

It will take a step back - but losing Gabe probably does that on its own. Although Omaha should be a defensive plus all by himself.

The thing that stands out to me is that these 3 guys (Gilbert, Pav and Jones - if that's the third) is they are all skinnier than anyone on our team last year. We basically had no one under 200#, and these guys are in the 170#-175# range.
Gilbert is listed at 190 and looks every bit of it.

I don't know why, since I have zero insight other than CF, but I was hoping for Timberlake or that Harvard dude. Now that I read more about Paveletzke, I love it!

My guess is Gilbert starts and Paveletzke and Momcilovic are the first two guys off the bench. This roster is shaping up to be very deadly on offense. ISU should easily be an improved squad that could compete for the conference title.

whoa...improved, yes, but compete for conference title? Remember we are going to be very young and so many new guys needing to build chemistry. I doubt Houston, KU, Baylor, Texas etc. are going to need that time together like our guys will. Just think how many guys will be on the floor that have little to no experience playing in the big 12? But like your optimism.

Big one! Keep surrounding Lipsey with elite shooters and scorers. This roster a few years down the road is going to be tough to guard.

Lipsey/Pierce
Pavaletzke/Hamilton
Gilbert/Indrusaitis
Momcilovic/Fish
Rock

Lets get some lenth and top tier athleticism to pair with it we are in business!

Watson?

Agreed. Last 2 years had a higher floor because of age and maturity. This year has a higher ceiling in my opinion because of talent, but youth may make thier floor pretty low and humbling some games.

Then again, we were humbled a few times the last 2 years too, so we'll see
