It should be noted that Jacob Park has not been really playing football for a while. There will definitely be a learning curve and a transition back to the game. But he does have talent as evidenced by his high rating coming out of HS.

I'm always so far behind. So today we think recruiting ranking do matter?

I think from the little knowledge that Campbell had on Lanning when he got the ISU job, he felt he needed to bring in at least 2 QB's that could have a chance to beat out Lanning.

I don't know how an incoming head coach could have watched the few games that Lanning played last year and not felt the need to try to recruit over him. Campbell probably watched a few game tapes from last year and determined immediately that we might need an upgrade at the QB position right away.

Now.... as offseason workouts and spring practice have gone on, it appears that Campbell has warmed up to the idea that maybe Lanning is good enough to be our game one starter? I think he has seen some improvement in him and sees what kind of leader he is.

But initially, Campbell didn't have any time to work with and made the quick determination that if nothing else, we needed some competition brought in at the QB position. And he's done that with Park, Kempt, and Noland. I think we'll have a VERY healthy competition now at that position and may the best guy win.

But I would guess that Campbell's views on Lanning's ability have grown somewhat over the winter months.

IMO, he brought in the best recruits at QB that he could get. And why wouldn't he? Even if he thought that Lanning would be the likely starter.

Lanning is the ONLY QB on the roster with any experience. Besides Lanning, we have a RS Freshman DeLira.

Kempt was an Oregon State signee. Redshirted one year and a squad member one year. Did not play in any games. Went to Hutchinson JC for one year. Accepted a preferred walkon at Iowa State.

Do you honestly think the coaching staff is projecting Kempt to beat out Lanning? Seriously doubt it. IMO, they are giving a guy a shot with a walkon offer to see what happens. Maybe he can surprise and you risk nothing.

As far as Jacob Park is concerned, he was rated higher. And has 3 years to play 3. But he hasn't played football in over a year and a half. IMO, he has talent and fits roster in terms of eligibility. Thinking could be that he could develop into a backup at this time and has enough talent to contend at some point for a starting job.

IMO, Campbell likely saw some good things in Lanning's play last fall. Because there were some good things. Lanning also needs more development. No doubt. But I am also sure that Campbell considered Lanning to be the #1 QB and still does. Which is far better than having a QB with absolutely no experience at all. And Park and Kempt have absolutely no experience at all. Just like DeLira, Noland have no experience.

Oh great, another "insider"

Isn't it awful when we have posters on here with real information? There was zero speculation in his post. Fitzy is a WRNL contributor, so it's not as if he's a random dude posting with an agenda.

Personally, I want more of this kind of "inside info". I appreciate hearing what people have seen or heard from inside the program. Sure beats everyone just trying to guess what's going on.

Now, you also have to realize that someone might be just feeding you a bunch of made up crap, but I can judge that for myself. Knowing what the coaches have been saying in public about Noland thus far though, I can easily believe he is sitting as the #2 QB right now and getting the 2nd most reps in spring practice.

Any good coach will try to recruit over the best player at each position. Otherwise why even bother? I'm not reading too much into this yet based on that.

I'd be pretty surprised if Lanning isn't our QB to begin the year. Rhoads was right to keep him at QB, IMO. If Campbell's staff can fix this accuracy thing he can be a heck of a QB, and he can run the ball well and has the body to not scare us every time he keeps it.

Can Park have a playbook and tape before he gets on campus? He could be studying the offense and learning the playbook before he ever gets here. Would not be a bad thing if he could I just don't know if it is within the guidelines of the all knowing NCAA.
