everyone is referencing 4-5 throws that he made all year that were just really short and not close...yes they were really bad but that is not bad for a sophomore in his first year starting. The reason I look at the same series of plays differently is that more often than not the next play after one of those bad passes was a really good play. So many QB's turn 1 bad throw into 2. Lanning didn't do that. I can think of 3 times where he threw one into the dirt and then followed it up with a gain over 10 yards. His down field passing was also on point most of the season with some pretty TDs against Texas, Baylor, and Iowa as well as throwing multiple others that were dropped.

All that being said...of course he needs to improve. It isn't a stretch at all that a sophomore who started getting all the reps will improve into his junior year.

Lanning might make a few above average plays throughout the course of the year, but he is not going to "Wow" anyone with his abilities, especially compared with other QBs nationally or even in the conference. He can still have a great season, but he has to make the smart decisions/simple plays and get the ball in the arms of his playmakers. It will be a rough season if he holds onto the ball too long (line play may require the ball out of his hands very quickly from the sounds of it.)

My viewpoint is having a competent offensive coordinator will help Lanning, that being said I am in no way sure he is a slam dunk.

I agree with your general thoughts, but it seems unlikely you actually remember a beautiful throw against Iowa.

I would love to be surprised but to me he's a poor man's Collin Klein. His throwing is poor and he has a nasty habit of disappearing at crunch time (See: Oklahoma State, Kansas State).

Refresh my memory how he disappeared at crunch time in those games.

Lanning got through the end of OKST throwing a pretty high number of incomplete passes, compared to a pretty solid first half, along with the INT on the final drive. Defense giving up 14 in the 4th Q didn't help, either.

Lanning really had an OK game against K-ST, but the entire team fell apart in the second half. This game in particular had an issue with not finishing drives in the second half, with a few drives reaching K-ST territory but not getting much further. Then, the whole fumbling ordeal (which really isn't the fault of Lanning).

That said, I do believe Lanning has a higher ceiling than what we have seen on the field thus far.

To be honest, I hope Park is the real deal and eventually takes over starting. He's the highest ranked QB recruit we've had in a long time, maybe ever?

Can park run at all? IMO we aren't built for a pocket guy right now. Our QB needs to be an every down run threat if this offense is going to do anything.

I understand that you would be excited we have a highly rated QB. If Park is the real deal, he will play over Lanning. Coaches will put the best player on the field.... but honestly, how many reps with the 1st team has Lanning gotten in his 3 years at ISU? Imagine the improvement he will make with a full season with the 1st unit. The huddle is his as well since he has had 3 years to build relationships with players that he needs to make plays for him. With that being said, the best player will play. My gut tells me that Joel will have earned the spot and he will be the best player for this unit.

BTW... Park's highlights remind me of Steele Jantz... moving in the pocket, making plays.

To be honest, I hope Park is the real deal and eventually takes over starting. He's the highest ranked QB recruit we've had in a long time, maybe ever?

Footwork is overrated imo. Arm angle, elbow position and release point are critical. Strong core and quick release important to. Check out the zero position and qb arm angle with Darrin slack. It's also reps and decision making. Balls into the ground stem from indecision at the last second. His ability to study film, transition to the practice field what he learned, and ultimately execute in games are what we care most. He will do these things imo

I may have to check that out, I guess I was always taught if your feet and hips are correct then it should generally fix the poor release, much like a baseball throw.

What offense are you talking about ? Last year's Iowa State offense ? I would suggest that you watch film of last year's Toledo offense. If this "M" position RB/slotWR is used to capitalize on speed and deception, then a premium goes to the QB with a quick release for accurately placing short passes.
