Well that takes things up a notch and a turn I was not expecting....

Edit: Open heart surgery isn't all that common with heart attacks is it? I know angioplasty (??) is. balloon that clears blockages and such. My father had that done, I believe my father-in-law as well. But actually going into the heart? That suggests more damage or actual valve issues - like Fred.

(not a doctor, didn't stay at a Holiday in either)

I had a heart attack a month ago. Was a small one and had one stent put in. My LAD was 95% blocked. Was off work for a week per the docs. I bet he will be recovering for a little while. Have a safe and speedy recovery. I'm only 44, good shape, no family history. You just never know.

You guys aren't helping my stress level at all.....

(glad/hope you're doing well)

i'm not sure what is considered open heart. Good for him to get back to Des Moines. If nothing else it will be easier for his wife.

Yeah was thinking the same thing. Sounds more like a defect than heart "disease" to me but then again I'm no Doctor but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express the other night.

It just depends really. In my case, the blockage was close to an "intersection" so the dr wasn't sure if he could get the stent in that area. If he couldnt, then he would have to open me up to do it. Luckily he was able to with the cardiac cath. Here's hoping no damage has been done and to a great recovery Jamie.

Glad you are ok. I feel so bad for JP's family, they have been through so very much.

Open heart is actualy "open chest" and includes the common by-pass surgery everyone is unfortunately so familar with because it has become is common.

My wife had heart surgery in 2013. I'll say a prayer for J.P. that it goes as well as DW. I have many good things to say about the folks at Mercy.

They are a great family that are absolutely Cyclone to the core. Iowa State is in such a better place now than when he came. I hope he is able to make a complete and speedy recovery!
