Nothing where success is determined by a judge is a sport.

Um, it's ballet. Nothing is determined by a judge. The audience likes the show or they don't. Of course it's not a sport.
All I was saying is that the dancers are incredible athletes.

Is boxing a sport?

I have always thought of the sport/non-sport division along the same lines as Rhoadhoused but never considered boxing. I'll say yes because you can win with a knockout so it doesn't have to go to subjective scores.

So if it's a knockout, it's a sport, but if it's a split decision, it's not a sport?

That arbitrary demarcation just doesn't work for me. I think of sports as something that is generally competitive, and requires a certain amount of skill or training or strength to BE competitive. There are a lot of sports where subjective judgement determines outcome.

Only on CF during the off season could a thread about a dinosaur movie end up being an argument about whether ballet is a sport.

To get this thread back on topic, I saw the movie tonight and really liked it. The acting wasn't all that great, but I do love Chris Pratt and some of the other supporting roles weren't too bad either. Sometimes you're just looking for an action packed summer flick where you can sit back, grab some popcorn, and be entertained; this fit the bill perfectly. Wasn't too over the top like a Michael Bay film but it still kept you completely entertained. I think it's well worth the price of admission to see it in the theater.

This was a fun movie. I'll watch it again for sure.

Chris Pratt trains dino's = believable
Woman runs in heels = GTFOH!

Also, teenager in 2015 can fix a jeep sitting for 20 years. That's less believable. The kid didn't even refasten the hood. Rant over.

I agree. The special effects were great - they were very cool but not over the top. That's kind of rare these days. The acting was OK. The writing was pretty bad in places. And the stereotypes just kept coming in hit after hit.

But overall it was worth the price of admission to see it in a theater.

Is boxing a sport?

If we were just making up sports and someone asked me if two dudes fighting counted, I'd say no.

But obviously in the pantheon of American sports it's accepted.

At least in boxing it's not an individual performance being judged and winners being declared by their ranking, it's scores based on two people actually competing against each other physically.

No? What about calling balls or strikes in baseball?

There's a big difference between having a referee in a sport and having the entire win/loss based on someone's opinion of an individual performance.

Everyone can get as technical as they want, but referees are not the same as judges who determine the entire outcome.

And 3-D. When the toenail punched through the ball, I almost screamed.

How about we leave the debate of what is/isn't a sport to the sports threads...since our opinions are entirely subjective...and let this be about the movie?

Have you seen Jurassic World yet? Did you enjoy it? :)
