I would say that CPR's winning percentage is close to our historical average. Going from the Big 6 Conference days forward it is around 42%. Not sure whether you should be including our 139-93-14 record when we played in the MVIAA up until 1927 and played the likes of Grinnell, Drake, and Washington (MO.) in that conference, and also played schools like Simpson in our non-conference schedule.

Anyway, no one is satisfied with the records of the last 2 years. I do agree with Pollard's decision to let CPR and his staff (the majority of which was new last year) have another season and then assess where we are at the end of this season. We have given other coaches similar latitude during times of poor seasons after being here awhile. Coaches like Johnny Orr and Clay Stapleton for example. We just need to wait and see I guess. There really is no reason for the doom and gloom predictions. They do nothing positive for our football program.

Come on now Stormin, I can't let you delete 35 years of Cyclone football in our overall winning percentage. You're discounting the original Missouri Valley years when the teams were made up mainly of the original Big 8 teams like Missouri, Nebraska, the Kansas teams, Oklahoma, and even Iowa. Yes Grinnell was also in the league, but I'm not sure how much difference there was in the student body size and athletic budgets way back then. You can't delete the Jack Trice years. The historical winning percentage of our football program is 45% period, and I'm sure there are a number of D-1 schools out there below that. Paul at 38% has some work to do to get up to that level. I think this year he has a good chance to take a step in that direction and I hope he does.

Okay. To put it into perspective, during the MVIAA years we had a winning percentage of over 59%. And for the last 88 years of being in the Big 6, Big 7, Big 8, and Big 12 our winning percentage of around 42%.

Even with the last two poor seasons Rhoads winning percentage is slightly better than the winning percentage we have had over the last 35 years. No doubt that he can not continue to have seasons like the last 2. But I am betting that Rhoads is definitely retained if he wins 5 games.

Yes, we are...and it isn't even close. I don't know if you're too young to remember or just older and have blanked out your memory from that time...a quick look at attendance figures for that era will prove my point...as will a glance at our facilities from then.
No we are not, the product on the field the last two years is abysmal,........ as in worse than any team Duncan, Criner or Walden put on the field. We won't win a conference game again this year - ABYSMAL PROGRAM

OK, as long as we can agree that the MVIAA (MVC) wasn't made up of a bunch of rum dums. It was started in 1907 as the 2nd oldest conference in the country behind the Big 10, and during its history was mainly made up of the eventual Big 8 teams plus Iowa. If CPR wins 5 he may very well get another year, though it may depend on how it happens and how the attendance goes. We have a decent chance to start 5-0, but if we lose the last 7 and attendance wanes, then it may not be such a sure bet. Best scenario is to bounce back with at least a 6 win season, get to a bowl game and play well there.

We were undefeated against the Big Ten last year.

This whole capsule is just sad. 42 per cent winning when you set up your own non conference schedule. Just sad. Five wins is no moral victory.

You are just clueless. Again....did you actually live through those down years with Criner, Walden and early McCarney? If not, you should pipe down immediately because you don't know what you're talking about. Further, if you're not just young...let me refresh your memory with our seasons from 1994-1997 we went 6-37 (with a winless season and a 1 win season in the mix).

So you simply don't know what you're talking about, GWad...anyone can make a mistake, but only a fool persists in his error.

5 wins is actually above average for an Iowa State team.

Putting the two driving themes you're obsessing through right now:
1. We have to keep CPR for stability's sake.
2. As long as we beat Iowa, everything is fine.

Never said either of those things. I said that keeping CPR for this coming year gave us our best chance of winning right now. Chris Williams expressed the same sentiments in one of his podcasts. Sounds like you advocate the Kansas approach to football.

Well, they did have Gale Sayers, and that got us "Brian's Song."
It's not quite beating Iowa, but it's pretty successful.

There you go again Stormin making our history worse than it is. 5-7 is 41.6% and our history is 45%. 6-7 actually puts us very close to our historical average so let's agree to get to a bowl game this year and play well there, even if we lose to go 6-7.

For the last 90 years our historical win percentage has been around 42%. For the last 25 years it has been around 37.6%. That is our reality and history. I don't really consider the days of the MVIAA to be real reflective of our football in the forerunner of the Big 6, Big 7, Big 8 and Big 12 Conferences. I am pretty sure we would do pretty well in a conference that included Grinnell and Washington (Mo.). As well as non-conference opponents like Simpson.

Our last Conference Championship was in 1912. We tied with Nebraska with a 2-0 record.....and did not even play Nebraska. Note the teams we beat that year.

Didnt KU whip ISU last year after a coaching change.

At the end of the day if this team does not win 4 of its first 5 games it will be a huge underachievement.

Coaches need to put players in a position to win.

Charlie Weis was fired and an assistant coach was named interim head coach.

We need to win games and it appears the front part of our schedule is easier than the last half. One never knows though. The TCU game was perceived to be a very winnable game in the spring of 2014. TCU was not thought to be that great.

Stormin, we all understand Iowa State's history. What is perplexing is how adamant you are that it is the norm and shouldn't be improved upon.

It clearly IS the norm, but nowhere has Stormin' argued that it shouldn't be improved on....so the only thing that is perplexing is your willful misperception of his argument. What he IS saying is that our best chance FOR improvement RIGHT NOW is to stay the course with Coach Rhoads and see how this season develops.

What's genuinely perplexing are those who think simply burning down the house is the way to fix the broken chandeliers...its not. Hanging on to a coach for too long can certainly damage a program, but letting them go too soon can be far more damaging. The end of last season was too soon...the end of next season may not be. Time will tell.

You can't just ignore the first 35 years of ISU football because you want to. I'd like to delete the last two years from our historical record too, it would slightly improve our historical winning percentage, but I can't. And the Big 8 traced its roots to the MVIAA because all Big 8 members except Colorado were full members of the MVIAA. The fact is ISU's historical winning percentage is 45% and all the cherry picking and rationalization in the world won't change that.

Well said. There's reason to have some hope for this season. I think most fans just don't want us to be satisfied with winning 42% of our games because that means no bowls and only 2-3 conference wins a year.
