Re: Keeler Fired from DMR

Fired is accurate but inaccurate.

To soften the blow, the employer uses the word "layoff," even though both you and the company know that there's no way you're coming back.

When I was part of a plant closing last year, they used the word "layoff," even though all of us knew that there wouldn't be a plant to come back to. In our case, in my meeting, we were ready to leave and had a nice joke of that. Usually, though, it seems to comfort people to hear "layoff" instead of "fired," even thought "fired" is the reality.
Nowadays, bosses are telling fired employees that their "positions are being eliminated" which the most honest thing to say about any "layoff." I read work blogs along with the tech blogs I also read. I believe that news organizations will have go web only, and charge subscription fees for what they now produce freely over the web; got to make money somehow. Printing presses are a huge cost to bear for a dwindling print market.

To be honest,

The days of localized sports journalism are likely over for smaller markets like Des Moines.

Perhaps, but something will fill that void....Perhaps Cyclone Fanatic?

I'd say sites like CF have already filled that void. I can't remember the last piece of ISU news that I got from a newspaper or local newscast before I heard about it on the web.

There will always be a job for good reporters like J. Walters who often get the scoop on these stories, their employer will just change.

Interesting newsapers don't recognize that? They lose subscribers and then they cut and lose the local touch and lose more people. It feeds on itself. Bring back local beat and maybe it would save them? Sooner or later a good paper will figure that out.

Dying industries don't attract visionary leaders, or the top-of-the-line leaders. They get the guys who aren't cut out to lead in growing industries, since those industries can be pickier.

They can get solid leaders, and people that can help slow the decline, but that's about as good as it gets. That's part of why dying/obsolete industries keep making decisions that limit even their declining potential.

Fox "news"

And in one post you have made it clear why this independent can't stand fox "news." I laugh every time someone says fox "news."

Enough of the politics.

Take it to some right wing page, I don't care to see it on the cyclone board.

I'm OK with the opinion, but I don't understand how it fits in here.

Did you start a thread that got merged into this one?
