I really want to be friends with you. Your whole "we pay taxes to something we don't use" argument is stupid because that's your choice. It would be like my company taking $4000 off of my salary, but offering me a vehicle slightly below what I preferred, only for me to turn that vehicle down and buy my own. Then, on top of that, I force my employer to provide a garage.

Agree, Tre. No guns have been held to any heads. If you don't want to go to Dowling (or any other private school) and pay tuition, then don't.

I think we should offer Kwaw-Mensah. He's got talent and would probably commit if we offered. Ames' whole offense is pretty good, their QB is impressive. We might as well hire their offensive coordinator too.

I agree. I've heard ISU maybe wary of K-M because of academic issues. So did Troy Davis and that worked out.

No reason other than the idea that if you recruit a team full of stud athletes, you want to be a part of that team.

Though nowadays this happens in public school. There's been a lot of examples in many sports in Central Iowa recently.

This. It happens at all the non-Des Moines schools in the area. It's not the schools actively recruiting so much, but they definitely give a pitch when a student moving to town pays a visit. Nowadays, a lot of the transfers start with the player / family looking for a better situation from an athletic stand point.

See, but now you're into the chicken vs. the egg argument.

The whole recruiting angle is a dead horse, and I really don't think it holds any water these days. Even though they have the ABILITY to recruit, I'm not sure they really do a whole lot of genuine recruitment. Kids want to win, and they know what schools traditionally do that. Martensdale-St. Marys isn't a private school, but they brought in kids from all over on their way to 3-straight state titles in baseball. The kids played together on travel ball teams and sold each other on the idea of playing varsity together. I would be willing to bet scenarios like that make up 99% of all "recruiting" at the high school level in Iowa. And that stuff can, and does, happen anywhere at any school in the state.

How did this turn into a private school recruitment thread? No more comments about Urbandale's under-use of Lazard? He was impressive when he was standing there, but I was quite disappointed that they didn't run plays that featured him.

Xavier has shut out 7 opponents this year. Coach Sabers of Iowa City High who got blasted 35 to zero last night at Xavier says this is the best defensive team in high school he has ever seen or played. To think Xavier couldn't have a chance against Dowling, Valley or Ames is silly on your part after that endorsement.

95' Iowa City West first team didn't give up a first down all year. We gave up one score after a goal line fumble. Sabers just said that to **** off IC West siders and because he had just been blown out. Though I like xavier over Ames.

I'm from Ames and I think the hype might be a bit much. I think once they meet up a great defense, they could be in trouble. I have no doubt they'd put up a few touchdowns against Xavier, but not enough.

But, to be honest, I think Dowling will probably take Ames out, if Valley doesn't first.

I'm from Ames too and I think they've earned the hype. That being said, stopping Valley's rush offense (and Swenson will pound it at them) will be a tall order for the Little Cyclones.

Recruiting?

Iowa City Regina.

Recruit and then go out and smash all these out-manned tiny schools into submission.

They are very admirable.

You seriously think a coach made that kind of comment after getting dominated in a state playoff game simply to annoy west-side IC people (his own fans) over a team from 18 years previous?

Didn't see the game, but did see Dowling take Lazard out of the game as well. Put a similarly-sized guy on him at the line of scrimmage and had matching speed downfield. Had one catch all night. Wonder if Ames did the same thing?

As an extension of the earlier talk about the 4A semifinals and how they've been dominated by the Big Four (SEP, Valley, Dowling, Ankeny) in the west, does anyone know who made the semis in '97, '98 and '99? I know Ames made the title game in '96, and I've tracked the complete history back to 2000 (Marshalltown is the only non-Big Four team to make the semis in the west in that time). I also know Valley, Dowling and Ankeny made the championship game in '97, '98 and '99. I just don't know who they beat to get there. Anyone know?

@GarmanSports: RT @vhstigers: Tyus Mason rushed for 478 yards. A new Iowa State High School record. #iahsfb

Should we now switch our attention to offering Mason? The Ames RB is yesterday's news...
