Just got back and finished reading these threads, and it's good to see some things never change. Apparently now losing records are actually better than winning records, beating bad teams is better than beating good teams, and a worsening conference record each year means gradual improvement. A 2nd round NCAA appearance wasn't that good because we had earlier lost to some teams we should have beat (so I guess the elite 8 year wasn't really that good because we had earlier lost to a bad Drake team). Bottom line is people that feel the need to diss Morgan (a coach that gave us great wins and post season success) and continue to defend GMac (a coach that has given us nothing but losing seasons) really need to take a good look at themselves. And I certainly don't dislike Mac and still hope he can get it done, it's just that so far he has done absolutely nothing any way you try to slice it.

I'm also trying to understand this, but apparently I just don't have any 'knowledge of NCAA basketball and home court advantage.'

McDermott is going to be under so much pressure in 2010-11. He doesn't seem like the kind of guy who will be able to just brush it off. So I hope he decides to step down on his own shortly after we get eliminated in KC.

Look, now the thread is on another tangent, but let's just thank Wayne for what he gave to the program and move forward. We all have some nice memories of those years.

Wrong and wrong. Thanks for playing. go back and try and understand the english. Not saying that losing more is better. Never said any year of Macs were better than any of morgans. Said Morgan was on the decline, and Mac has improved in many places, just not Big XII wins. Not even saying that a stumble here or there isn't a good trade off, but consistantcy was not there we were all over the board and also could be said that we had more bad losses than good in 05-06. Get it. Declining from a much higher starting point.

Mac has not had a worsening big XII record each year. That was one year of transition with some seasoned players then a big drop in experience level. Check your facts he started out with a trasition year with 6 wins then has stayed the same. Only one year with a worse record after losing what little experience he had. Since, He's lost the same amount as the year before against tougher competion. So to say he has done nothing is flat out wrong.

Nope, read what I wrote.

I agree, I think the job Morgan did under the circumstances was very admirable. but we should also address the beating down and inaccuracies in the fact that mac is getting worse. He is not. And in many respects he is getting better. Not better than where Morgan ended, but better than where the program started when he took over.

I actually get tired of defending Morgan, but I've stated before that as long as some keep posting rumors and opinions that ignore the facts, I'll keep defending Morgan. Myth 1 is that Morgan could recruit but couldn't coach. Then how do people explain that he beat many ranked teams that had NBA talent while he had none of his own. His record against ranked teams is far better than even Orr, Floyd and LE, who had pros like Grayer, Hornacek, Hoiberg, Cato, Fizer and Tinsley to work with. Another myth is that his practices were unorganized chaos (though that's contradicted by some). So again how did he beat those ranked teams and go 5-2 in the NIT and NCAA? Don't most coaches say that a team plays like it practices? Again a myth that holds no water. Another myth is that Morgan had undisciplined players that some have called thugs. George is the only player I can think of who got in trouble and he was booted immediately. In fact I haven't heard of any of Morgan's kids in any trouble since they graduated. Fact is almost all of Morgan's recruits were good kids and still are. Fact is Morgan did a very good job at ISU, especially taking over a program in scandal and having trouble getting anybody to take the job. Defend Mac all you want, just don't do it by dissing Morgan because that's ignoring the facts.

So Morgan beat ranked teams therefore his practices had to be organized. I'd love to hear your thoughts on global warming.

I was there. Saw them with my own eyes. Not my friend knows a fired coach and he said or we beat some good teams therefore. I was there. Not organized. I'm not going to call what I saw myself in person a myth because you used some horrible logic.

Yeah, I am just trying to look at the positive with Morgan. GMac is a separate issue. I want to see GMac succeed.

Ames- I'm just going by coachspeak as they almost universally say that you play like you practice. So pardon my skepticism when you say that Morgan's practices were chaotic, when others have said they were not, and again from what I know about Archibald I highly doubt he would be involved in chaotic practices. Beating ranked teams almost half the time and going 5-2 in the NIT and NCAA don't indicate chaotic practices. 1-20 against ranked teams and 4 losing seasons in a row might, or at least might indicate that something isn'g going too well in practice.

mikeiastat-As has been pointed out before, one year doesn't make a trend. Morgan improved from his first to his second year, and dropped back his 3rd year when he had to replace two good big men in Homan and Staple with first year players. Now regressing from 6 conference wins your first year to 4 in your 4th is not progress, no matter how you try to spin it.

So you are saying you can't actually deny that the practices were chaotic, but using generalizations you can say it probably wasn't chaotic. You should be on Myth Busters.

If you want to be skeptical of me fine. I'm just some guy on a message board. But you heard this from a friend who talked to a coach being accused of having chaotic practices. Even if we believe that you (some guy on a message board) really have a friend that talked to a former coach we just end up with a coach saying his practices were good. That's pretty much what I'd expect.

Yeah we should totally not bring this up again because you have ended the myths:jimlad:

agree for the most part, and I was pretty bummed when he got fired. I was excited when they hired Mac, but was annoyed at the firing of Morgan.

YOu just contradicted yourself in a way. No one year doesn't make a trend. wouldn't you say 3 does. And I don't like to use Morgan as an example because he did do a lot of good things. However since the example is out there, here you have the rebuttal.

The same way you discount a declining last record year (not the only way the team was declining by the way) you should be able to realize that the first year was the outlier for MAC, based largely on the difference in a couple of players experience level. Since then the trend has been upwards. Just hasn't reached the same level, isn't the same as declining.

The stuff people around here see on the news is all they tend to believe. True is, the news doesn't show everything that or anything remotely close to everything that happens. My sister dated a player under morgan for mult. Years and is still friends with most of the players from those years teams. From the stories you hear from these guys, you would be astonished with what they didn't get in trouble with and all the run-ins with the law they had that weren't anything but a get on your way gentlemen. As being around more half of the starting five on multiple weekends, the things that went down would really really make everyone question how they did what they did on the court

Ames- There are others that have posted that Morgan's practices were organized, and I'm just going by the evidence, which is that Mogan got pretty good results so I'm more likely to believe there was nothing wrong with his pratices. But let's try to end this merry go round because I don't pay to go watch practices and I (and I imagine most fans) could give a rats a$$ what practices are like. It's the games we pay for and for my money I'm much happier seeing entertaining basketball with big wins and post season fun than a slower game, very few big wins, and no post season fun. Hope that makes this clear so we can end this debate on practices.

mikeiastat-We're still not connecting on this. My point was you can't say the Morgan trend was down based on one year when he did better his second year than his first. And you just can't discard GMac's first year because you want to, and if you did his conference winning percentage would actually be worse since he won more conference games his first year than any other. He's been below 6 ever since and is now at 4, so any way you slice it, that's going the wrong way.

yaman3- You're right, it;s a ridiculous argument. I could really care less about the practices. It's the games I care about.

The guy is selling satellite dishes for crying out load. Defend all you want, there is a long list of schools that didn't go after him once he was released from his contract at ISU.

the same list wouldn't touch our current coach either.
