Pollard isn't leaving here for Wisconsin...there's not much left to build at Wisc that Alvarez hasn't already built. Pollard will be here until the fball program turns around and is respectable...which no AD has ever really accomplished consistently. I think JP want to make his mark on his orofession by completely turning around an AD that was near bottom in all P5.

Wasn't Pollard the AD at Wisc when Alvarez was still coaching? Why would he want to go backwards?

I'd like to see a position created for Mac in the Ath. Dept. like "Coach Emeritus" or something similar. Let him do PR events and fund raising. Just throwing this out there.....

Observations:

1) Great move on Campbell et al. on recognizing and welcoming back a coach who elevated ISU FB in recent memory. While the timing would have been awkward with Chizik and the pre-existing connection with Rhoads a negative association, the move by this staff is pitch perfect. Another gesture to show that this staff is really smart on steps towards improving a program.

2) At 0:14 Campbell has a freudian sip and about says "Ohio State" rather than "Iowa State". Given he is from Ohio and relatively new to Iowa I give him a conditional pass on this.

3) Lastly sunglasses! I was aware of McCarneys's recent health scares, but didn't realize he had many issues and surgeries on his right eye- actually blind. I know understand why all of the sunglasses I have seen on McCarney in recent years. Thanks my friend google.

I love everything about this. Mac and Loney were the first D1 coaches to offer me a scholarship. Even though injuries my senior year meant I ended up elsewhere Mac kept in touch with me and my family my entire college career. Class act guy that far too many people on this site disrespect.

We all owe Mac a lot. IMO. I wish there was someplace to fit him in w/in the football program if he wanted.

As much as we should acknowledge and respect the past, having McCarney too involved in the current program would not be wise IMHO (consultant- maybe, guest coach at clinic- great, paid coach/adviser- no).

I think it fair to assume most fans have expectations for ISU's FB program that exceed anything that McCarney ever accomplished. Mind you the B12 is much different, well college football is so much different than when McCarney was at ISU.

Having too close of a connection is not really looking forward and really is perceived of clinging to the past. McCarney is not ISU's prodigal son like Cael or Fred, or Tom Osborne is to Nebraska or Barry Alvarez to Wisconsin.

I will restate, however, that this move by Campbell to involve McCarney is a brilliant and savvy move on all fronts.

I agree, in my heart I just wish he could come to practice every day and get like a megaphone or something

They are fitting him in as much as they should. His time is done. Earle is still alive, are we making him a position also.

Not really the same thing. Earle Bruce is part of the Ohio State broadcasting teams. While Bruce did some really good things at ISU, Mac was beloved by fans, students, the city of Ames, etc. Bruce wasn't the most likeable guy.

My Friday race was cancelled so I am hoping to get over to practice Saturday to see coach Mac.

I remember watching the end of a spring practice one day when he yelled at the players for leaving too much crap around the locker room for the managers to pick up. A "who do you think you are?" talk. I went right back to my office and cleaned it up before the janitor got there...

You have to differentiate between Mac the person and Mac the coach.

I don't know of anyone who would disrespect Mac the person. However, Mac the coach did have several shortcomings despite what he accomplished at ISU.

which is why he was terminated and we tried to move on.

The coaching camp is a nice nod.

That, I think, is why sports are so tricky at the college level. Remember CPR's final presser where he was talking "old school football" and that kinda stuff? People can have that pure coaching/leadership....go be a high school coach or whatever...but CPR got a HUGE check while here and when not here. Doesn't mean he isn't a good person/human being, just wasn't getting the coaching done. BUT, I'll also give him some credit in building energy/hype/attitude that will be an ongoing foundation for the program.

There are coaches that are horrible human beings, but keep jobs based on their wins alone.

Sports are about emotion and telling stories....but sometimes the emotion and the reality are not consistent and fans can struggle with that.

I'm happy for the work Mac did here and the impact he made on so many...I also supported JP's decision at the time....and LOVE that Mac is back in this capacity now.
