Marshalltown might be (ok, is) a crappy town, but they got some decent golf there. For a town that size sorta in the middle of nowhere, Elmwood and the Legion are decent. Not great by any means but decent.

Elmwood is a great bargain for a country club. We also have The Harvester 15 minutes away.

Hey, only Marshalltownians are allowed to make fun of M'town. You're correct, of course. But... we did have the state baseball tournament for a long time. And Marshalltown Trowel, the best Maid-rites, the best Taco Johns, Lennox. Okay, that's it.

I know it isn't technically in Marshalltown, but don't forget Rube's steakhouse. Even if grilling your own steak isn't your thing, they have some greats cuts there.

Also, there's Fisher Controls and Diamond Vogel Paint - had to give some props to my former employer and one of their suppliers. Ok, back to the bashing of M'town.

Yeah, Rubes is pretty good. But, if you want a really good steak or prime rib, go to That Place in Conrad (10 min. north of Mtown). Great food at ridiculously low prices.

As for Fisher Controls (now known as Emerson I believe), pretty much everyone in my family has worked there. My grandfather worked there over 50 years.

You forgot the relatively new Hwy 30 bypass which now allows people to drive AROUND M'town rather than thru it. :biglaugh:

I remember hitting the Taco Johns around 5:00 on a tuesday - had about 75 seniors pushing me out of the way for 59 cent tacos. For a minute I thought I was at the VFW for bingo night.

Zenos rules. Don't know the owner. But when I am home, I gotta have it.

I grew up there, Parents owned the Tastee Freez on Center Street until I graduated from ISU in '80. I was back there in July this summer for the first time in like 20 years and I hardly recognized the place - looks shabby to me. Even the Freez looked bad, run down, it really sucked to see how it had changed...
