Ahh, the funny delusions we always go with as Cyclone fans.
If that job opens this year, and they offer this year, he's gone this year. That's what competitive guys do and that's what people building a career do when the biggest openings appear.

You are absolutely correct Erik.....to Matt Campbell its all about his "Career"......

Johnny left for $, man. He said so himself.

U R soooo right my friend...Poor Johnny Orr was only making $18,000 at Michigan and we doubled it to $36,000. Johnny even stated when he arrived in Ames....that he didnt know if he could win at Iowa State but he said and I will give you his quote..."I dont know if you can win here, but Im gonna find out".....and the rest is history.

I think you are a little light on numbers. He was already in the thirties and coming here bumped him into the 40s.

Just for the record ...I have supported every coach at ISU since 1962....I bought season tickets every year for 30 years to see some of the worst football in the history of this program........
Yep, started school at ISU in 1981...talk about some bad football. Campbell is nothing like that...looking forward to the season!!!!!

Something to think about for you guys concerned. I do not think Campbell has a good enough resume to get the Ohio state job. I haven't liked a coach this much probably ever, but that is not a resune of an OSU coach. Add in the buyout (which they could pay) and it doesn't seem like it would be worth the risk to a program that can get 99% of all coaches available

Let's say they do want him and hire him. They will not do it until after the season. In my opinion Campbell would habe to win 9-10 cames in order to still make him a too target. If we only win 7-8 nobody is going to be talking about him to OSU. Possibly win the conference. If that happens I will miss him for sure, but he would be leaving us in a place we have never really been.

He was making 33 at Michigan. His first salary at Iowa State was 45K.

The reason he took the job was because he made a ton more off the court. The total package pushed 100K.

He was the 9th highest paid coach in the big 10, and his ad had laughed at him during their post season meeting when he spoke of wanting a raise.

Speculation usually causes meltdowns without knowing what's actually going on. Once the season starts hopefully things have settled a bit at both schools.

If anything, things like football season are what people look to to take away from real life so it sucks that from the very beginning, that turmoil is just around the corner.

Cyclones.tv has a great interview by Tom K with a former AD who was involved in the Johnny Orr hiring. I watched it last Saturday morning. Great inside perspective that he says "even Johnny didn't know about."

"I have the utmost respect for you and the job you have to do, but I’ll only answer questions that pertain to our football program, Iowa State football and our future. Fair enough?”

To me this says, I respect you so you need to respect me. Don't bring up this crap to distract from our team, staff and program. It only hurts us with recruiting efforts and the culture of the program. The media (local especially) needs to stop with this speculation. The story about some media texting Matt about a potential opening just weeks before the season? LOL - that is garbage. As Matt said, it's not fair to the players, staff, fans and program to distract everyone from what could be a great season coming up for Iowa State. Leave the guy alone and let him do his job. In case you didn't know, his job is Head Football Coach at Iowa State.

As was mentioned by another poster in this thread, I'd love to see Coach revoke media access to anyone that brings up these topics that distract the progress of the team, players, staff and program.

Now it's time to focus on the team, just like Matt said. Let's hope and cheer for a great season for Iowa State!

How some of these media folks handle the situation may well define the relationship that they will have with Campbell in the future. Seems like CW is already in a very different place with Campbell. In fact, I expect that we will learn more from what Campbell voluntarily offers CW in their next summer interviews than from all the questions the other guys ask all year.

It’s a great story. Lou McCullough was the ad, I Urick and cox were assistant ad’s

Johnny was speaking at creighton’s banquet, and they had him stop to look at Hilton, which was just a few years old at that time. They worked on him a little bit, but Johnny was not going to take it. Dave cox said they went back to McCullough figuring he’d not want to spend that kind of money, but he said yes.

They told Johnny what they could do, Johnny said you’d they would, it would be hard to say no. But it was Romie that sealed it. They were in Ames looking at the town, and she said let’s come here. The house they picked out and bought wasn’t even on the market at the time.

Johnny’s last press conference is still to this day one of the saddest moments ever in Iowa State basketball history.

“I’ll never stop cheering Go Cyclones.”

Everybody read this again and calm the **** down. If we win 9-10 games and lose Campbell, we have an attractive program for the next hire.

Agree totally.
And the only fans that I would expect to be posting on CF regarding this hysteria are worried TOE fans. They see Matt Campbell coming and they only can hope he isn't in Ames for the next 20 years.

When this all passes this staff will have another selling point for recruits. If kids in the BIG Rust Belt weren’t familiar with ISU or CMC already, getting mentioned for the top BIG job will quickly change that.
