MONDAY MUSINGS: ISU game plan vs. Tech was conservative, but brilliant

I'd like to see us get Montgomery the ball on the edge more. Seems like we love running him right at the other teams' nose guard.

Montgomery would be deadly on sweep plays, quick pitches, swing passes, draw plays, & screens. I still have nightmares of Wadley torching us that way. It's like those concepts don't exist in our playbook.

I would call our conservative offensive game plan a bug and not a feature.

Yes we are grinding out yards and points. Because our offense has yet to get into any type of flow and is not performing anywhere near the level the defense is performing.

The offense needs a serious overhaul and is underperforming the talent available.

I am in total agreement with this assessment. It's not that we were conservative, it's that we were predictable. There is a difference in the two. Two or three play-action conservative passes on first down would have done miracles.

Campbell is just setting Texas up for the flee-flicker. He wants them to think we are predictable!:p

ISU has never done it before and it has never happened in the Big 12 before either.

What about nationally? What are the odds to even be in a situation to get a safety 3 games in a row to begin with?

I wonder if it’s ever happened in the ncaa to get a safety 3 weeks in a row without actually tackling anyone in the end zone.

OSU- punter lets ball doink off his face mask and dribble out of bounds
WVU- holding call in the end zone
TTU- grounding in the end zone

I had a similar idea. A semi-pro poker player once told me that it's important to establish an identity at the table. When the other players think they have you figured out is when you can go against type and outplay your cards. Texas Tech is a very good team. I think we won because they got impatient on offense and we were able to run the ball. We were able to run the ball because we committed to it. If teams get out of their base offense to stop the run, or even if they get lackadaisical because they believe a run is coming, then we can get the big play. We can do some of those things when we need them - like 11/17 or 12/1.

I found a reference saying that Wake Forest scored 5 safeties in a game in 2001 but find it nowhere else and the best I can tell is that they scored 5 safeties on the season:
Game 1 v. ECU - Q1 - blocked pass batted out of the EZ by the QB
Game 4 v. FSU - Q4 - intentional grounding in EZ; Q4 - blocked punt
Game 9 v. UNC - Q4 - high snap out of EZ
Game 10 v. GT - Q4 - [unknown]

Obviously this was not 3 games in a row nor 3 safeties in 3 games either. It is interesting that just like ISU they seemed to find different ways to score their safeties each time.

I remember seeing a tweet saying 3 safeties in 3 consecutive games has never happened since some stat-tracker was established in the 90s. Can't seem to find it again.

CMC has talked about making sure to attack ALL parts of the field. Middle, edges, short, deep.

Part of that is slugging SuperDave up the middle - a lot. No it doesn't work every time, but sometimes it does. All that said, it did seem like it was excessive given the results!

I am more concerned if we run SuperDave's legs off his body... Let Croney get blasted 4 or 6 times a game up the gut.

Some people on here just need to go back to their PS3 and NCAA Football. They haven't figured out that the coaches prepare for a plan that will get them the win. When the team needs to be more aggressive (OU and OSU) it they play call that way. When its time to be more conservative they will be. It keeps opposing coaches guessing as well. Look at the lack of blitzing on Saturday after the last two games. Texas Tech planned on tossing quick hits and screens but ISU didn't do that and they didn't go with zone passing or deep balls. Don't bang on the coach with 3 wins over Top 10 schools in two years and is setting up ISU to be at least a bowl team every year.

this is sooooo dumb. we put up 422 yards of offense and scored 31 points against one of the better defenses in the conference.
Is that a lot or mean our talent utilization is at a high level?

We put up 30 points and more yards on WVU, but we also left a lot on the table. We’re that talented.

Clearly everyone is happy with the win and this staff is doing a great job. Finding flaws in a 40-31 win over a good team is a benefit of being a fan of a good program. It’s preferred over finding the positives in the blowout losses of a bad program, but both are enjoyable.

Way up there
I don't think the stat on undefeated/untied Octobers is getting enough hype - Prior to last year we hadn't had an October with no loses or ties since 1938. And we've done it two years in a row.

That's just crazy. And with 3 wins over top 10 teams, it's not like it was a scheduling quirk.

There were 2 other rated teams as well right? Tech last year and Okie St this year? So 8-0 the last 2 Octobers with 5 of those wins coming against ranked teams, 3 of which were on the road. Not. Too. Shabby.

It seems to me there are an inordinate amount of safeties being scored in college and NFL. It seems in the past, or at least in the recent past that safeties were pretty rare but maybe it's my skewed perception. Maybe someone with more ambition and time than me can look at the numbers to prove me wrong.
