This is exactly what I've been getting at. If we try to become a running team all year at the expense of possibly winning some games, will there be anyone in the stands by the end of the year?

I'm not sure if JP wants to wait 3 years for some wins. A near empty stadium for 2 or 3 more years won't pay the bills.

Stands have been full through the worst of the CPR years. What would change now? Unless this is NOW the straw that broke the camel's back which has been predicted for decades...

Some notable coach's first seasons...Bill Snyder only won one game in his first year. Mel Tjeerdsma at NW Missouri St lost every game his first year. They will go down as one of the best all time coaches at their levels. It will take time for this staff, but I trust them.

KF started off 4-19 at Iowa and everyone wanted to run him out the door immediately.

I just still am not sure if ISU fans will be patient enough to wait that long?

Those are fine. The offensive line is terrible. That's the hand he was dealt. I'm guessing since he replaced a coach that was fired, he probably knew the team was going to suck.

I would love to know, though, how he felt like the game went from a coaching staff perspective. That's the part that drove me crazy on Saturday night. I don't care that they lost. I do care that the entire staff appeared to have no ******* clue what was going on. The players weren't prepared. Why didn't the coaches have an idea that this was going to happen? Why didn't the offense have any rhythm (like Campbell said on Saturday night)?

At the best, that was the second worst team on our schedule. We had a long time to prepare. And it sure as hell appeared that the staff thought that they were coming out for the spring game.

The quote I'd like to hear from Campbell today is something about those concerns.

It sucks that ISU lost to UNI, AGAIN! Not going to sugar coat it, but I am not going to jump off a bridge either. It was one game against a team that has traditionally given Power 5 schools fits. The starting QB had 4 TOs and floundered at the zone read. There are a lot of things that need fixed. All the TOs in the game were from guys trying to make too big of plays for the situation, rather than taking what was there. At this point it seems reasonable to wait a few games to see if things get better.

Can't understand fans that act like the coaches don't want to win games more than they do.

I think you might be underestimating how many people still liked Rhoads. I know you wouldn't think so reading this website, but the entire Iowa State fan base doesn't post on here.

I was surprised at how dead the crowd was even early in the game (when it still wasn't apparent that the coaches had walked on to the football field for the first time) on Saturday. Not sure why that was, but it was unusual.

I think Campbell will be fine and it is clear he has won over the CF crowd. But I don't think he has won over all of the fans yet.

Yes, one of our easier games this season is now in the "L" column...it sucks. Now we collectively only see about 2 others we have a chance in...but who knows.

The point is, that 3-5 wins was not an overly inflated range of wins before the season started, so you shouldn't be calling out fans for reasonable expectations to make it sound like "told ya so!"

Im NOT calling the fans OUT.....and yes I agree that "Before the season" 4 wins is what I thought, but I said 2 wins after that debacle of a LOSS sat nite......

And thats a whole lot more than the fans saying Zero Wins This Season....Do they know what a Zero win team looks like.....Jim Walden and 1994....and btw I saw every home game that year......as I did starting in 1975 until Dan McCarney got axed......

And yes I still go to some of the games........Too Dam Old for Bleacher seats with my Back Injury...SAD but true

We played uni, less than a mac team.

UNI would beat several MAC teams..Like I've said Bryce I'd be far more concerned if we had lost that UNI game and not had any turnovers or hardly any penalties..then I'd be scared. 5 turnovers and 100 yds in penalties...yea gonna lose any game with that.

Hayden Fry was a legend at Iowa..legend..KF first year Iowa was horrific. 2 years later they are in the Orange Bowl. Not saying that will happen here but it takes some time. What I see is a new HC and staff that are recruiting winning players who are captains and are from winning programs. They are recruiting better kids on paper than we've ever seen at ISU..ever.

We have some really good players at some positions but none of that matters if you have an Oline that is completely new and green. A year from now or 2 years from now if the team looks like it just did then I'll be right there with you.

DMAC, Chiz, CPR.... Yeah - fans will wait if the coach is making progress. ESPECIALLY if he is making progress.

Game 1 is a fairly small sample size.

I've been pretty vocal about how disappointed I am that the coaches were a disaster Saturday night. I've also been pretty vocal about how I think Campbell will be OK. Both of my statements can be true.

But I think if we can point out how bad the team is all of the time (and I do), it is certainly fair to point out that the coaches **** the bed on Saturday.

The good thing is that they appeared so bad on Saturday that if we lose 70-3 this week, but they appear to have stepped out on a football field, I will think things are going in the right direction.

UNI wouldn't beat very many MAC teams the way they played on Saturday. That's the thing....this wasn't UNI coming out and playing amazing. This was UNI trying to give the game away and Iowa State's players were too bad and Iowa State's coaches were too bad to take the win away.

I hope by "tone down expectations" we still mean expect to win vs fbs opponents. Even ranked ones.

Agree, however, we got dominated in the trenches on both sides. That is what scares me the most. They ran for nearly 200 yds more than us. Owned the time of possession. Ran WAY more plays than us.

And we did our normal things like turn the ball over, get a dumb safety, AND of course no ISU football game is complete without a missed extra point..... so we even did that too! Just the same old stuff. UNI owned us in the trenches though. Now that is scary. Fixing a few turnovers or penalties won't fix that fact. If UNI owns us in the trenches, I can't even imagine what Iowa, OU, Texas, Baylor, TCU, etc will do to us.

If I was a recruit and I saw that game I would look at a few things.
1. The sold out crowd
2. The facilities
3. What the coaches were telling me
4. How did the guy playing my position look? If I was a good o-line man I'd be licking my chops for playing time. Coach has already showed he is going to play the best kid available.

Unfortunately this will be a long season. However, I'm still optimistic about what the team will look like in a couple years
I'm one of the few who didn't think the "over" bet was a sure thing. That thread is hilarious.

I was at the game and grossly disappointed but even as we were leaving I couldn't help thinking that if we brought the penalties to a normal level and kept our heads during the last three minutes of the game, we would have won that game. The running game, both offensively and defensively, is the big elephant in the room. I doubt we can fix it this week, or even this year, but we can loosen opposing defenses with the pass and then start amping up the run. We may not win many but we'll be close and if the other team screws up, we win.

In order for us to 'not win many but be close and if the other team screws up, we win,' to happen we will either have to improve a ton (very possible) or all of our opponents will have to be as bad and play as bad as UNI. We weren't playing the best team on our schedule. We were playing the 2nd to worst or worst. And that team happened to not play well either.

I'm not to worried about wins and loses the first year. I support the coaching staff. that said,I've never liked the main focus being to "establish the run". Sure if we where on the same level of an average big 12 team that's great but we are not. I think airing it out more being creative and getting rushing yards when the D is thinking pass would serve ISU best I thought that for a few years. But every coach is so intent on having our running backs shoot gaps that are not there right into the back our own Offensive line. Establishing the run sounds great but does it really hurt if we establish it after playing your strength first. I wouldn't game plan to beat Alabama by establishing the run because their line would eat ours alive and since it seems like everyone's line is going to be better that ours I hope they get creative and atleast make it fun to watch
