More 4-man in 2024 for the Cyclones?

I know there are a lot of great football minds on CF, but I think I am going to trust the professor. Whatever he wants to run is what I want to run. I doubt they deviate from the three man front too much. It has been successful for this staff.

Although, I grew up playing a 5-2 and I could argue that would bring some uniqueness to college football. :jimlad:
There’s going to be a lot more of it going forward. Not the standard 5-2 but something like the Ravens and what Michigan did. Probably more amongst the high talent teams because you need dudes everywhere. That system can’t hide a whole lot.

I wonder if Onyedim might play inside a little bit on passing situations so we can have speedier guys on the edges. Samuel Same is a guy to keep an eye on this year.
Obviously depends on how much edge depth there is but I’d set him outside of Orange. You can’t help everywhere and that should pretty much guarantee single matchups opposite them.

But yeah, I’ve said since last year he has the most NFL value because he can be anything but a true nose or a true standup edge.

5-2 Monster with a cover 3 and two DEs standing up is the only way.

I thought Trent Jones was underrated last year he needs snaps this year even if to spell singleton. Orange is interesting in that he looked like Tuba Rubin in the first game of the season then disappeared rather quickly
Gonna disagree with ya on Orange. He’s a difference maker.

Since you losers can't seem to get this one, I'll do it.
If we only play with 4, I really question Campbell's judgment. I'd put at least 9 guys on the field, certainly 10, even 11 when the opportunity presents itself.

Unless #11 is a kicker. Then 10 is fine.

I'm going to question your fandom since you don't seem to believe ISU has the talent to win playing 4 vs 11.

Everyone talks about the offense and lack of running game against Memphis. The terrible defense we played got overlooked.
Agreed, but I think the thing people forget is that bowl games are not what they used to be. Seems like a glorified scrimmage anymore. Hard to gage interest and motivation of teams and players and even coaches.

Actually going back and forth helps identify the weaknesses of the Oline.
It is also part of the philosophy of "being multiple". Teams may prepare better for or be predisposed to handling one, two, or three looks but if you try one and they don't handle it well you have opened a gold mine. Even if they start to figure it out they have used a lot of physical and mental energy getting there and who knows what has happened in the momentum of the game. They may not be as sharp when you throw in a wrinkle and go back to a previously tried look. Tax them physically and mentally and exploit mistakes when they make them.

I'm thinking prior to ISU the coaches ran 4-man front defensive schemes predominantly. Talent was a reason for the change to 3-3-5, but so were the offensive schemes (no-huddle offenses & airing the ball out) as well as the levels of talent on opposing teams. Schemes have changed within the league along with its composition, so if we have the talent, being multi-faceted & executing both well could be extremely productive.

As to 'being multiple', I don't think that is proper English. Wouldn't it be more accurate to say, "we want to have mulitiplcity", or be multi-dimensional or multi-faceted? Don't know if one can simply be "multiple"? But I digress

I feel like this change has less to do with the Cyclones talent level at LB (or even DL), but realization opposing coaches have learned to exploit some weaknesses in the 3-3-5 defense.

I don't feel using a 4-2-5 is that big of a change for the staff, I recall prior to Campbell and Heacock coming to ISU they used a 4-2-5 defense at Toledo. Adding a 4th DL does three things:
  1. It allows ISU to be more physical at the line-of-scrimmage.
  2. Makes it harder for opposition run game to have success running outside the tackles.
  3. Puts our DL in position for more one-on-one blocking at the snap and create more disruption along the line-of-scrimmage.
It should also create a more balanced run support decision for safeties like Freyler and Verdon. It always seemed our rush defense needed our safeties to be uber aggressive in run support, creating susceptibility to play-action passes down the middle.

"Being Multiple" isn't just for the offense anymore.

edit - Velo beat me to it

We got told by CW, Pollard, and the coaches that the fans need to show up for the bowl game. So tickets, flight, 3 days of hotels, Uber, food, beer, Beale Street. It wasn't cheap. And I saw a crummy product from the OL and defense. So if the players and coaches are going to treat these bowl games as glorified scrimmages, then I have no interest in attending going forward.

Yeah, I hate trying to figure out motivation for bowl games. Who is motivated, who isn't. Does anyone want to be there? Does anyone care? Obviously the David's of the world like Memphis are going to want to show up and beat the Goliath's of the world. Beyond that it seems like it would be really difficult to be excited about. They are glorified scrimmages and have pretty much lost all of their luster in my eyes.
Well they should be paying the players.

I'm excited to see some of these 4 man fronts. This lineup would be some seriously skilled beef:

6'4 335 Dom Orange
6'2 300 JR Singleton
6'4 295 Tyler Onyedim
6'3 285 Trent Jones

Cycle in Petersen, Ezeogu, Snyder, Hawk, should be fun.

I get players that are high draft picks opting out.

Maybe I'm naive wouldn't the ones that are playing along with the coaches want to play their best because they are competitors and their own pride.

Minor bowl games have ALWAYS been what they are today. To call them glorified scrimmages is a mis-characterization.

Teams go into bowl prep with more goals than win the game. There has always been an eye on player development for the next season.

Plus, it's not like Memphis was a bad team. They have been an elite G5 team for a decade. They have good coaches and talented players. And when it comes to bowl games G5 teams will typically have a David vs. Goliath motivation. And in bowl games, motivation is usually a bigger reason for winning than talent or coaching.

I think anyone that considers themselves a player at the next level would probably consider sitting out to avoid injury ahead of the combine, pro day, draft etc. And I wouldn't blame any of them for doing that. What is a bowl victory for a team that finished 6-6 or 7-5 versus potentially risking millions in future earnings if you get hurt in a pointless exhibition?

Agreed but I hope Tyler leaned out a touch. If he's just a little faster I think he would be a monster.
