I was an IL kid who got that tuition break ~15 yrs ago. It was half the amount but costs have skyrocketed. Big part of the reason I came to ISU. IL in state was still $$$$$ and just as far of a drive.

Hey, basically same exact situation as me.

We're getting ready to move to the Twin Cities from Boston, and for all the people who talk about Minnesotans being somewhat closed-off, I wonder how that would compare to people out here.. New England is pretty clique-y.

I’m talking about property damage.

There’s a right wing talking point that Minneapolis has been destroyed and people are fleeing and it’s not really true
I was actually surprised by how large of an area was substantially affected. It's not as if it's the whole city but it's more than a couple of blocks. People are not fleeing. That is certainly an exaggeration.

It's probably a bit similar but our accent is a little easier to understand.

Since I seem to be the only person that thinks Minnesotans are getting less arrogant, I should probably assume that I am getting more arrogant. I think I'll take that as a compliment. I usually consider myself more ignorant than arrogant.

Of course it was.

I'm not from Minnesota and haven't lived in Iowa in 20 years, but have family in both. It's just another thing that Iowa was late to game on, but think they invented, like craft beer, decent restaurants or pretty much anything the rest of civilization was doing years before them.

I get it, you are big on Des Moines and Iowa and you should be. It's a nice place and Des Moines is really coming up and I also understand that comparing a metro area with more people than Iowa isn't really apples to apples.

Being 10 minutes of ahead of Iowa in the latest trend probably isn't something you should brag about but if it makes you feel good......
I don't compare Minneapolis to Des Moines. I compare Minneapolis to places like Chicago, Milwaukee, and KC. In those comparisons, it usually falls to the back for long weekends. It's craft beer scene is pretty good compared to the others. It's restaurant's are not that great overall. I've eaten at 2 of the places you mentioned and they were good but far from great.

So this guy moves to a new city and you proceeded to fill the back end of this thread with how everyone there sucks and it's not very good. What if someone judged all Iowans based on you? The plural of anecdote is not data.
Living in a suburb and spending a weekend there is a big difference. I'm sure they're are plenty of places in Minneapolis that are great to live in. Also, I never said everyone sucks or anything like that but feel free to make **** up.

The suburbs are a whole different world than south Minneapolis. Hell, it’s a diff world once you reach Tangletown or Nokomis.

I was surprised how big of a following the Gophers have in basketball. They had 80% of the fans in Des Moines for the Ncaa tourney a couple years ago.

There's plenty of stupid tattoos and rednecks in the Twin Cities. You're just not looking in the right places.
I will say that I have to occasionally remind some TC residents that out-state (and to your point parts of the greater metro) MN exists. You would think that the great Minnesota get together would remind them each year.

You must live fairly close to my brother (also an ISU grad), he is just off Voyager at Mt Estes Dr.
As the crow flies it's about five miles but there's a lot of low ground between my house and there. At night you can see the stadium lights quite easily. Can also see the AFA chapel from my hood during the day.

Do you know if your brother belong to the Alumni Association? There is a very good group out here. They have game watches every week.

I am shocked that after 12 pages that the driving hasn’t come up…left lane, on ramps, four-way stops. We really enjoy living here and make the most of it. If I’m allowed one modest complaint, it’s the terrible drivers. A theory of a Chicago transplant here is that it’s all the out-state people moving to the TC. I also thought I had an advantage, because drivers Ed was taught in school; though it sounds like that’s not the case in IA anymore.

I'll say this: Minnesotans do not know how to drive in the left lane of the interstate. They clog it up and get passed on their right.
