I've never been able to buy a morel worth a damn at a store. Besides, food tastes much better when you hunted it, killed it and cooked it up yourself. It brings out the primal instincts. Of course, these are easier to kill than most animals.

We just fry them up in butter (no margarine, please) with a flour breading. I think it is best if you eat them with a steak and salad. Soak them in water for a few hours first, though. This gets any sand or bugs out that tend to like to hide in the little folds.

They can be very rich this way so be careful about eating too many or with nothing else. I once ate a bunch of them before driving to Chicago. I have never been so sick in my life. It put me off of them for a couple of years. I would get nauseated just smelling them frying. I still love them, though.

Luckily I can eat as many as I want and haven't gotten sick yet. I do know a few people that has happened to though. One thing to watch out for is what we call fake morels. Usually they are pretty small with a dispraportioned sized stem. I know people that have gotten sick off of those.

Here's a false morel, although I don't see how someone would think it's a morel but apparently it's happened. I've actually seen a couple of these, so they are in Iowa. These are highly toxic so don't pick em.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but these are also solid whereas morels are hollow.

See my quote above. Sometimes they aren't that dark, darker than normal but not as easily identifiyed as this picture.

I know that I got sick off of too many morels on an empty stomach. My father in law is a lifelong morel hunter and he would not confuse a morel for it's evil distorted sorry excuse of a twin. We had hunted these as a family.

It's a good point, though.

I've also read that you can get sick when consuming morels with alcohol.

I know a few people that can't eat them at all or they get sick. If you've never had them before I'd recommend only eating a little at first and yes alcohol will make the reaction worse so you might not want to be drunk the first time.

I personally LOVE breading them and then deep fat frying them.

However, you can make a lot of money selling them if you have a good honey hole. Last year I saw them being sold for $30 per lb in my area.

If you get a bunch and you want to store them drying works great. I've still got some from about 4 years ago. Every once in a while I pull some out soak them in milk to rehydrate and they are good as new. The milk adds a little more flavor, I almost like them better this way then fresh. The leftover milk has some good flavor in it also so you can use it in a sauce or like I like to do in scrambled eggs. All I did was clean them cut them in half and left them on drying racks for a day.

I was going to say...I thought it was common knowledge that "prime hunting spots" are highly classified. Its kind of like saying, "I found this shipwreck that is full of old Pirate gold on public land. This is where it is located ______"

Prime was the wrong word to use. I just meant known public areas where people like to hunt. This will be my second year hunting in Iowa City.. Last year I found one mushroom.... I remember how sad it looked. I fried it in a pan with an egg and cried as I ate it..

My wife uses some crushed up croutons (Italian I think?) as part of the breading.
With some egg & fried in butter...
Mmmmmm, shrooms...

I like to flour mine up a little and sautee with butter, minced garlic, and some worchestershire. Breaded with cracker crumbs is good too. In fact, I don't know that I've ever had a bad morel.

We dip in egg batter, roll in townhouse cracker crumbs and fry them in butter. If you deepfat fry them it is a little tricky. I had trouble with them cooking quickly and were dry.

a few years ago, not in iowa, me and my step dad found 4 trash bags full of morels. best summer of my life i swear!!!

you stuff them with cheese and then you wet batter them in egg and then you dry batter them in seasoned flour. nothing is better than that!!!!!!!!!

Just got in from a short walk in my yard and found 7 small gray ones in quick order. They seemed small, about the size of my thumb, but I am not use to finding grays, so this might be normal size.
Regular morels should be only a few days behind..
