I don't see how anybody can fault the defense in this loss. We just need a serviceable running back, and we'd probably win on Saturday.

We have things that the defense needs to fix, but 21 points won't win you many B12 games.

I think we'll see the staff finally decide to utilize one/both freshmen running backs against TCU, which needed to be done during the Baylor game. We've talked about RPO and Purdy maybe not making the right read sometimes, but it's more so that he trusts himself more to make a higher yield play than Croney. Handing the ball to Croney is essentially conceding a play. That change alone would make a huge difference in getting things in the right direction. Jirehl Brock looks like the answer to some of our running issues, and he can't get a carry because....?

Somebody else in maybe another thread commented on bright minds rising quickly in the coaching profession. I think that there are bright minds on the staff and hope that they are learning from the same mistake they've made two seasons in a row - being so risk-averse that it has placed the balance of the season on upperclassmen (Kempt, Noland, Croney) when there has been far exceeding younger talent rotting on the bench. That cannot continue in the future. For a staff that talks about winning in the margins and doing the little things to not understand that margin for error increases with better talent playing is frustrating.

Yes, Hall and Jirehl haven't been with the program for as long as Sheldon Croney. But if a staff is giving the bulk of the load to a low-talent running back simply because he's been with the program longer and can provide pass protection, I question that staff's thought process. You find a way to get the ball to playmakers, period.
Purdy's mistakes on the read option (don't think it was an RPO) particularly one with Croney on Saturday was pretty significant interns of potential yardage lost. Everything about that play was perfect, but Brock just madethe wrong read. It happens. Most read option plays aren't like 50-50 as to one option is going to work better than the other. In fact I'd sayits usually pretty binary. It's not always easy to make the right read and sometimes the right read might still get you 1-2 yards but I don't care who you have at RB and QB, if you make the wrong read it won't work. Period. Any RB on scholarship at any D1 or D2 school is going to gain a chunk of yards on that missed read option with Croney on Saturday and probably no QB is going to make yardage on that play by pulling it. He simply made the wrong read.
I doubt that as you suggest Purdy is purposely pulling it when he knows the read is telling him tp hand it off. If a QB is consistently doing the wrong thing thinking he can make a play out of a **** sandwich then the QB or the read option need to be removed from the offense. More likely the QB will be removed by injury.

I appreciate all the effort and hard work Croney has given the program, but that guy shouldn't be getting carries unless we are up by 30.

I agree completely.

I think Lang should be the primary ball carrier with Kene sprinkled in as much as possible given his health.

Brock / Hall just don't seem to be 'getting it'.

At one point the defense had Baylor go 3 and out 4 times in a row. The offense put up no points. That is just inexcusable.

I think is it fair to say that so far Manning's return has been underwhelming.

As this sequence was occurring, you could just feel our chances slipping away. I wasn't even that upset at the end, because we were trying to pull off a miracle after pi$$ing the game away right here.

However, it is concerning to be very average in the month of September every year under Campbell. While it does not define the season, it certainly puts a cap on the high ceiling. We may look back and see Iowa and Baylor in the top 20 to end the season, which would excuse a couple close losses, or Baylor may end up like the TCU game, and we'll be thinking what if.
Do we finish the season with tangibly less average play? Were the Baylor or Iowa losses any worse performances than the wins or losses we’ve had in November and December the past two years?

Go back to 2018, losing on the road to Iowa with unequal prep and losing to OU weren’t really more average performances than our October and November play imo, although a different QB did help.

Were the 2017 Iowa and UT performances different than the performances later in the year, outside of the OU game?

When nearly every game, regardless of month, is generally about the defense keeping us in it and the offense doing just enough, I think the last two years are more about the schedule and luck.

Would it hurt to try it out? lol Not like it can get too much worse in short yardage situations.

Yes it would probably hurt to try. Short yardage hasn't been that bad.

Plus tall guys tend to suck at short yardage in general. Lanning was great at it, but he was a very good natural runner in terms of vision, leverage and leg drive. It was also a huge advantage lining up as a QB with a bunch of pass attempts under his belt. You've got an extra blocker vs getting a handoff and the defense has to respect the pass to at least some extent.

It’s always been above the OC level. We have a very good staff, but scoring efficiency isn’t their strong point. They’re not going to out-call most defensive coordinators.

Difference for me, the previous two seasons, there was a significant change in the offense. Whether they won in October despite the change, or the change is what propelled them to be better.

What's the story line going to be this season? Could be like you said, schedule driven, and they'll go undefeated in October. Setting up a couple big weeks in November, which we all had circled in the preseason as crucial, and season defining.

When do we see the Matt Rhule to Ohio State rumors? Let Baylor have that fun.

This was my biggest frustration! The staff never gave the run game a chance in the first half and I can't figure out why. We essentially allowed Baylor to drop 8 all day long...

It's apparent to me anyway that OC Manning does not trust the running game and so look for 50 passes a game.....

It is probably more about not yet trusting the O-line for the running game. This year is so different than last year when you could depend on Montgomery to make something happen on his own if needed.
