If this was year 2 or year 3 of the Rhoads era I'd agree. But seven years in, the only reasonable way to measure success is by wins. And I hope they get a bunch more. Maybe they will; I'll keep an open mind. But if they limp to another 2 or 3 win season and Pollard doesn't make a change, then it's a giant middle finger to the the fan base.

We already got that finger a few years back.

OK.....I have had a few beers with buddies here watching the football game tonight so I have to say this: This program gave the fan base the giant middle finger after the Liberty Bowl and nothing was changed. The good 'ol boy coaching fraternity and contracts were more important than Iowa State......that is how I see it.

This is even better than what was on here after the UNI game.

It's all about wins, but even at that, the scoreboard is more kind than our quality of play. We played competently in about 5 or 6 of the total 16 quarters thus far. Thankfully UNI and KU are not good and scholarship limited.

2nd half vs. UNI out scored Panthers 21-0
1st half vs. Iowa led 17-10
Out gained Toledo by 175 yards in 2nd half.
Led KU 17-0 at half and out gained them by 100+ each half.

So honestly curious what 10 quarters were incompetent?

I count 7 so far. 1st/2nd qtrs against UNI. 3rd/4th qtrs against Iowa. 1st/2nd qtrs against Toledo. 1st qtr against Kansas.

I agree with that OP that the defense has been a nice surprise but the offense has been really really poor.

Poor by crazy Big 12 standards, yes. But Cyclones in top half of college football in yards per game.

So, we were incontinent for half the game against the hoks, and they beat us. Then, we were incontinent for half the game against the Rocketmen, and they beat us. You just can't afford to be incontinent that often or people will think you're crappy.

You wanted to fire Rhoads after that season? That was one of the top 5 Iowa State teams of the past 30 years. You should check your vision.

After seeing the Pinstripe Bowl, the following season, and the Liberty Bowl.....I think a changing of the offensive coaching staff and philosophy was warranted. I am a CPR fan actually....I wish he then would have made awkward and difficult moves--but obvious and ultimately best for the Institution of Iowa State--to get a winning offense. Not new staff....just a new offense. And I don't even have a Phd....I could see that then. Mocked and ridiculed, I remain a Cyclone.

Move past the boxscore.

1 well-played quarter against UNI, 2 against Iowa, and being generous, 2 against KU. Toledo was a complete game of keystone cops. Give CPR credit, he recruited well enough to get enough talent that allows inept play to statistically romp a MAC team and beat a FCS squad and a historically bad P5 team.

We are no doubt better than last year in my mind. 2 issues though; first is senior laden oline and mangino probably is leaving.

The offensive line has 3 starting seniors and another senior getting valuable playing time. Our chance at a bowl game is this year. Next year we have a brand new oline and a new qb to break in and we should struggle.

The offense is starting to show improvement from the messingham and becoming more consistent. If Mangino would stay a few more years then I would have some hope; the problem is I think he is gone and Rhoads is screwed if he leaves. I know people would disagree but with him Blaney and Tommy Jr we are finally seeing a disciplined offense being deveoped and the young guys will be much better prepared than previous guys.

If we are to get to a bowl game we are going to need Richardson to start hitting some deep passes and we need some turnovers and we will need Cole N to hit a game winner or two I think. Its possible but I will lose hope if we cant pull an upset in the next 2 weeks.

Does statistically romp mean to lose?

But that doesn't matter. The entire point is to score points and we don't do that good enough by any standards.

Wins and losses are the ultimate barometer, but I'm not sure how you can say Iowa State has been inept or incompetent through four games. Good chat!
