Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Could not get past the carnival level. There was this one spot where you were trapped and the only way out was to get past these flying floors that blocked the way.

The original Legend of Zelda and the original Metroid. Those two games were hard and I did not own them, so beating them as rentals was nearly impossible.

The final boss on any SNK fighting game (Last Blade 2 - I'm looking at you!) and the final boss on Street Fighter 3: Third Strike.

No. Bald Bull part 2 is after Soda Popinsky. That Bald Bull can only be knocked down with star punches. After him is Don Flamenco party 2, then Super Macho Man then Tyson.

maniac mansion -> found out later i missed an event you HAD to do at a specific time in order to beat the game -> but the game never told me i missed the event. My friends and I spent countless hours one summer trying to beat that game on rainy days. Just typing this still makes me mad

This should mostly be NES titles. They made games harder back then because the games would be too short if they could be beaten easily.

E.T. on Atari. Not only was I unable to beat it, I was unable to even play it for more than a couple minutes without dying.

Same, I could count on one hand the number of games I've finished/beat probably, my problem is usually that I've got so many I want to play I have a hard time sticking to just one and beating it.
