UNC (not that I want to copy everything that they do, but might as well start somewhere) actually has objective criteria for how they deal with this. According to here...

http://keepingitheel.com/basketball/retired-jerseys-2/

"Retired" Criteria

Oscar Robertson Trophy, formerly known as the United States Basketball Writers Association National Player of the Year
National Association of Basketball Coaches Player of the Year
Sporting News Player of the Year
John R. Wooden Award
Naismith College Player of the Year

"Honored" Criteria

MVP of a National Championship winning team
Member of a Gold Medal Winning Olympic Team
First- or second-team All America
ACC Player of the Year
NCAA Tournament MOP

Who from ISU's history would be in those categories -- substituting ACC for Big Eight and Big XII of course, if we were going to work off those standards as a starting point?

Ejim, Fizer, and Tinsley were all Big XII player of the year.
Georges Niang was 2nd team consensus All American

That's what I have off the top of my head.

I don't think ISU has anyone in the "retired" category. Fizer was runner up for POY.

"Honored" Criteria

MVP of a National Championship winning team
Member of a Gold Medal Winning Olympic Team
First- or second-team All America - Fizer, Jack Flemming, Grayer, Gary Thompson, Tinsley, Waldo Wegner, Niang, Ejim
MVC/Big 7/Big 8/ Big 12 Player of the Year - Abdul-Aziz, Fizer, Gary Thompson, Tinsley, Ejim, Reece "Pinky" Greene
NCAA Tournament MOP

The list of retired jerseys is Thompson, Abdul-Aziz, Grayer, Hornacek, Wegner, Hoiberg, Stevens

So the "UNC honored" list would be...

Abdul-Aziz
Ejim
Fizer
Flemming

Grayer
Greene
Niang

Thompson
Tinsley
Wegner

I bolded the ones not on the actual list.

I would assume Monté is second-team AA, I hope, to go with this.

Hoiberg
Hornacek
Stevens

...would not be?

Interesting how that mixes the list up.

I've read somewhere, quoting Pollard, that the criteria includes the following:
  • They must be elected into the ISU athletics HOF, and something about how that is a 10yr process.
  • They must have earned their degree.
  • Then, they would be up for basketball discussion.
Are the other hanging jerseys all in the ISU athletics HOF?

Updated OP with today's stats...I'll keep this thread updated as the season progresses. Here's hoping to Naz getting the record - since that likely means we made a deep run the NCAA tourney and had a good Big12 Tourney!

Naz is now just 5 3s away from tying the single season record for 3s made. Let's hope for a monster game from Naz against Purdue to advance and sets the record in the process :) Also, he's 13 away from the career record - need to win a couple more games to have a shot at that, definitely within reach if we win 2 more.

How about he gets 3 per for 5 more games?

I hope naz sets the record and only scores one the next game ;)
