ND practices have been awful

Navy is always a statistical outlier because of the offense that they run. The Michigan game was in a monsoon, and they ran the ball down ND’s throat, so they didn’t need to pass.

ND was very unconventional against USC. USC has three amazing WRs and a good QB, so ND actually defended them in such a way to force USC to beat them on the ground, which is completely against conventional wisdom.

I don’t think that Iowa State has WRs like USC, but it wouldn’t surprise me if ND’s game plan will be to drop a bunch of guys into coverage and bank on being able to stop the run.

Our best running game goes to the outside (or misdirection), depending on our (excellent) TE's to block. In the same manner, if you drop a bunch of guys in coverage, those same TE's should have space under your "cloud" or "cover 2". Coaching is gonna win this game with the proper adjustments. Got a big knot in my stomach already waiting for this great matchup to start!

It seemed really odd to me when Notre Dame let go of their coordinator. There must have been something really bad to let go of the coordinator prior to the bowl game without having a back up plan. Additionally, they have a relatively young person (27 years) essentially learning on the job. While he may have a great offensive mind, it still takes some experience in just being a manger.

If Brock Purdy can step in to his throws along with decent offensive line blocking, then I don't think Notre Dame has a chance. Our best drives this season were when Purdy was stepping in to his throws and not throwing off his back foot. Additionally, if the defense can hit the right tackling angles and maintain good containment of the pocket, we should be in great position. Again, I don't think this team has played to its max potential all season for a full four quarters.

I'm glad you brought that up in regard to Purdy throwing off his back foot which does not usually bode well. Is it simply because he's rushed out of the pocket or a bit of a bad habit? I know when I see that happen I want to close my eyes and hope for the best! Just wondering.

Throwing off the back foot doesn't really matter if you are accurate. This is criticism from an era where QBs were expected to step up into the pocket on every pass play. Not the case with most offense these days.

Pat Mahomes and Drew Brees throw off their back feet all the time...

Only the great ones are able to throw off their back foot and be accurate. It's a skill and a very hard one to master. Rodgers does it all the time as well. Although it's a skill, it should only be done when absolutely needed, and there are times when Purdy should step up into the pocket and step into his throws. You garner more zip on the ball this way and the ability to drive it better down the field.

This is not a knock on Purdy either. His ability to throw off of his back foot is great, meaning he's even better when he doesn't. It's something I guarantee the coaches and him are working on and something you'll probably see less of as he continues to grow as a young QB.

Motivation is an interesting dynamic. Last year ND was playing for the NC in Jerry's place so it might take a little extra from their coaches to focus the team and losing your OC probably does not help unless the new OC makes an instant connection. ISU players maybe went down to Austin last year with as much focus on the atmosphere as the game. The winner of this game might be determined by which coaching staff can get their players dialed in for the kickoff.

Agreed. Last year Georgia was bitter about missing the playoff, and instead of using it as motivation, they did the exact opposite and got beat by Texas. ND looks like they’re walking that same path.
