Does Crawford feel stuck at UNI? When they brought Tuttle in, seemed like Crawford may have been pushed down the hierarchy. Maybe thinks there's more opportunity in Ames.

If this is real.

There is a million more opportunities in the big 12 versus Valley.

It helps to bring in someone who has been in Ames before. Welcome home, coach

Crawford is a great addition to the staff. He's a McDermott guy who played for Greg at UNI and then worked under him as a GA and DBO at Iowa State and Creighton before returning to UNI as an Assistant under Jake. Have heard great things from a player relations standpoint and believe he's more of an offensively focused guy. He's also originally from St Paul, Minnesota so will further establish our ties in the Twin Cities. Someone also mentioned Texas connections but I'm not sure where those came from.

It seems a little unclear on how it will shake out title wise between him and current player development coordinator Nate Schmidt but regardless, this is a great hire.

All out blitz on Chatman?

I absolutely love doubling down on recruiting the upper Mid-West. We play in a superior basketball conference to B1G, put players into the pros far better than our regional peers. Wisconsin plays an awful brand. Iowa has a crazy coach. Minnesota is a dumpster, same with Nebraska. Northwestern is a joke. Missouri is awful. Creighton and Illinois are the best competition.

Would be interesting to know if the staff has Chatman or Cam Christie higher on the board as a guard for 2023. With all the tournaments that happened last weekend, it seemed like the news was that the staff was prioritizing Momcilovic and Christie. Been hard to find much info on Chatman lately.

I have no doubt that they have a relationship with him from all their visits to Watson. Daughter's boyfriend (TG student) mentioned their really good guard was a pretty good dude. I assume he was talking about Chatman.

The word in Cedar Falls is that he's taking the 'non-coaching' role to be home more and not have to do all the recruiting travel. His daughter is a REALLY good player and he wants to be able to watch her more plus they've got two younger kids that he wants to be around.

Going to Iowa State for the same, or slightly better, money without having to be gone all the time is a huge win for the family. He's a great guy, amazing work ethic, relates to kids really well and has a very good offensive mind. He's a very nice addition to Iowa State's staff.

I’m guessing with the budget issues at UNI that the non coaching rule at Iowa State pays quite a bit better.

Interesting.. So is Micah Byars going to the bench? Or is Nate Schmidt moving up?

Sure. That’s exactly what any employee would tell an employer that doesn’t want to burn bridges. As for travel, it’s not like UNI is recruiting nationally. So he’s on the road a few days a week. That’s not uncommon for a lot of people. He chose coaching. He’s not moving to Ames to get off the road. He’s moving to Ames to place himself on a different trajectory career-wise.

I think Chatman is a scoring PG. Christie is more of a combo 2 guard

Byars makes more than that as Dir of Ops

I’m guessing a brand new director of ops at Iowa state might not make that though. Byers has like 12 years in.

given his characteristics that you are describing, I kinda wish he would be recruiting young men. But kudos to him if he wants to spend more time with his family.

It wouldn't make sense to go from #2 at UNI to #4/#5 at ISU without a big pay bump.

I’ve been saying all along he’s likely getting a significant pay bump.

He may not be on the road, but he’d be an asset in recruiting. All the relationships he’s built aren’t instantly removed once he’s staying in Ames for a pause on recruiting (if this happens).

I know you're thinking he gets a raise, but why are you labeling him a brand new Director of Ops, or in this case Director of Player Development and Recruiting (Schmidt's old role)? He's been a coach for 14 seasons, including two years as assistant director of ops at Iowa St.

TJ shouldn't have any trouble getting JP to sign off on Crawford, as Director of Player Development, getting Byers money. That's a discount on a guy that would otherwise would be a candidate for #2 or #3 bench coach.

Schmidt likely isn't going to make exactly where DRob left off, so Crawford getting Byers pay is likely not a big change in budget. Adding another bump for getting basically another #3 coach in the program, and now Crawford is making around 100k more than at UNI, without being on the road, while at least maintaining in his career ladder.
