Re: J. J. Bass

You know what is missing from this pre-season? Extensive deliberation on the prospects of J. J. Bass. It just doesn't feel the same.

I heard that he was a combination of Lendale White and Reggie Bush...

What ever happened with Bo Williams? I know he was seeing a specialist in Pittsburgh for concussions back in the spring but hadn't seen anything since. Probably missed it but anyone what what the deal is with him?

Or Bo Williams. Where is the discussion about how great he could be?

I really wish we could have seen him get on the field more.

I saw several practices and Hamlin can really run and has a nose for the ball. He also is good a stripping the ball. He reminds me of Nick Moser in that respect only he is a much better LB than Moser was. He will be ok out there.

Moser wasn't a LB.

Lanky and unimpressive, Spring game. I am pretty sure he weighed the same thing as a true-freshmen, he has 3 years one campus now, and gained all of nothing...... Maybe he will play better than I anticipate, but IMO, he is undersized and not the answer, hopefully Lattimer is still an option if injury hits......

Hamlin arrived on campus in fall of 2008, so it is two years. And Lord knows, all players reach full potential by the time they are Sophomores.:jimlad:

Still, you are right, he should be more than 198 by now. Some guys just have trouble putting on weight. I think there will be some reshuffling if it comes to him playing a ton of downs, I am sure he could hold up for awhile, but I can't imagine it would be easy for him to take a beating for several games at that weight.

If one of the linebackers gets hurt, you will be seeing the 4-2-5 every down.

I'm not worried. All the spread offenses we play we need more DB's on the field and less LB's anyways. And actually having small LB's against the spread really isn't a bad thing either.. assuming they are faster and better at dropping back which isn't always the case. But if they are smart and have heart, size doesn't matter. Its against teams like Iowa and power running team we want the big stacked LB's.

We don't play very many spread offenses this season though. Lots of teams will pound the ball, Northern Illinois, Iowa, Kansas and K-State, Colorado, Nebraska.

..and then you have Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Missouri, and Utah who will spread the field out.

Exactly. Split 50-50 on spread teams, and you know that Texas and Oklahoma will run it all day if they can. We have 3 LBs with any experience and no starting experience at all. Plenty of reason to be a little concerned with our depth at LB.

A couple questions...
1. Would we ever consider redshirting Zach Guyer so we have an experienced kicker one more year after Mahoney is gone? They've said he's a pretty dang good kicker...

2. Is Bo Williams medical redshirting due to headaches/migraines or whatever is plaguing him...?

Bo has already used his redshirt.

Whether he ever might petition for a sixth year of eligibility is a matter to be considered when he has completed his eligibility.

Guyer never appeared in any games last year, so that could be considered his red-shirt. Its up to him and the coaches if he wants to go after the 5th year.

Even if Bo can play, he is at best 5th string. Just forget about the guy. He'll go down as Patrick Webster Part II.

Is Bueker beefing up for a move to the DLine? 247 lbs? That can't be his ideal playing weight.

I know I got the word at the scrimmage about leaking inside info, but I gotta let this one fly. Buek has been doing a bit of long snapping. IMO, once Dakota moves on, Brett will play a year, then he has a very legitimate shot at the NFL as a snapper. Long snapper is one of the easiest ways to get signed in the NFL. He is a big fella and still has the quickness.

At 6 feet each, we might have the shortest defensive ends in all of D1 football. I checked all the Big 12 depth charts and it's not even close.

How can anyone say that our DL is improved this year when last year's starters at DE were Lyle and Parker and this year's starters are Neal and Parker? That sounds like wishful thinking to me.

The 2-deeps on the interior is the same as last year except for McDonough. It will take a minor miracle for ISU to win 6 games this year. I'm willing to give Rhoads a pass as it takes more than two recruiting classes to build a team, but he absolutely must find some big bodies to fill out his 3rd recruiting class. Doing a quick sort on the "weight" column in our roster shows me that ISU has 85 players < 250 lbs and only 29 players > 250 lbs. By comparison, Nebraska has 106 players < 250 lbs and 47 players > 250 lbs. None of ISU's commitments for 2011 are greater than 250 lbs.

Parker & Lyle started a game or 2 together before Parker's knee injury put him out the rest of the year. Last year's starters really were Lyle & Neal. I think Parker can be just as good, if not better, then Lyle was last year and I fully expect Neal to be better then he was last year too (has put on 15lbs of muscle).

As far as our interior DL, the coaches have been raving about how much Rump has progressed and how dominating he has been in practice. Same thing has been said about Bailey Johnson the past week of practice. At 6'5 & 290, Jake M is a beast of a man in the middle. We are looking to have a solid rotation in the middle of the DL.

I think the potential is there to have a better DL then we did last year. Let's see if they can put it all together on the field.
