Do you believe the candidates that are listed aren't qualified or proven to be a legit coach?

I will simply say they aren't home-run hires or the best I know are interested for a competitive price.

He's said he's planning on continuing to compete for now.

Then I really hope we go very hard after Cody Sanderson. I know he is very respected by guys who know a lot more about wrestling than me

Why bring in someone that isn't a homerun hire and lose the recruiting class. Then keep Travis and keep most of recruiting class. If it doesn't work in 4 years, look elsewhere.

You lose part of this freshman class and recruits, you are looking at 4 years to rebuild. Esp with 125,133,141,149,174 and Hwt all seniors

Totally agree with this. If you are part of this donor group, why would you take a risk of losing recruits and losing ground in years to come? Pollard needs to look outside the program and get people involved that know the sport the best.

Whoever it is- NO BONO. For the love of God, no Chris Bono.
Anyone but that guy and that includes a Brands. (which will never happen btw)

This went around a lot last time as well. Why are some so against Bono?

Ben Askren (who for some reason I have talked myself into believing is a great candidate)- ELITE qualifications as a wrestler. Has a wrestling academy that could bring great youth talent to Ames on a regular basis. Has the kind of personality that would draw in fans and I believe, recruits and had a very entertaining brand of wrestling, ala Cael, that could be appealing.

Others? Thoughts? Hate mail?
.
That would be an interesting one. He does have ties to the state.

Why do people think JP is going to raise the bar on candidates he seeks when he has shown no desire to do that even in the big revenue sports? He had donors offering money we've never seen before to support big ticket coaches for MBB and FB and he refused to even entertain the prospect for more than 5 minutes.
.

I was hopeful because:

1.) JP deeply cares about his legacy. One of the first things people bring up when talking about the job he's done is the descent of a once proud wrestling program. Fair or not, that has to bother him.
2.) The amount of investment he would have to put in to wrestling to make us elite again + lure in a top tier coach is relatively small when compared to the $ it would take in any other sport at ISU.

While I have no doubt JP has a future for Wrestling (I know for a fact he does), everything I've heard makes me believe it's going to be another project type coach with more risk than reward in many fans' eyes. While I'm happy with our MBB and FB coaches, nothing I've heard makes me believe I'm going to be as pleased with our new wrestling coach.

Prove me wrong for once JP, I'd love it if you did. Right now, it's looking like a long road through the land of irrelevancy.

Well, that is not encouraging, but it can't be much worse than a few of the seasons we've limped through.

To play Devil's (JP's:)) advocate, there might have been something else going on, maybe just rubbing people the wrong way, but when Cael and Kindler left, university athletic funding was much less certain.

Anyone could see that these two would be winning national championships in the future. It was a no brainer -- maybe the most slam dunk hires in the history of Iowa State athletics. So in that respect it seems inexcusable. On the other hand, there was a real need to prioritize the income generating sports at that time. Times were different. It might have been a concern not to overpromise. The kind of money coming in now after the conference realignment certainly wasn't anticipated at that time.

On the big time sports, Hornacek would have seemed to be a great hire, if that was a possibility. I might be mistaken, and I honestly don't recall exactly, but I believe Auburn and Creighton made significant contributions to our athletic department. I doubt that that was in the back of JP's mind, but wonder if the realignment ordeal made him more circumspect in the more recent hires.

Obviously, I appreciate the info, but don't like what I see Jeremy has posted above.

If I'm a betting man, one of the paulsons will be our next coach. Pollard will take the easy way out here and give it to one of them. It shows Pollard has no interest in wrestling like we have all known. I get losing recruits will suck, especially a nice recruiting class like this, but if we don't do this right, we'll be sitting in this same spot a few years down the road.

The thing that ticks me off about Pollard is about the track and cross country stuff, that sport will never generate any money hardly for the university and yet we build a new complex and hire a top 5 coach, we know where Pollards allegiance is at.

Also, unless we promote one of the paulsons, i don't see an announcement coming until after the season. I just can't see us saying for instance Bono is our new coach today, and then he and Jackson have to coach their current respective teams till the end of the year. I've never seen anything like that happen..
