The explanation I heard today is that it is a rule because total team scored points is a down-the-line factor in determining tiebreakers for the playoffs.
I think we will see a rule change that will allow a coach to defer it on the final play of a playoff game situation.

I was watching the game in a bar and most of the people were Vikings fans but there was one Saints fan. He left right after they kicked that final field goal with 25 seconds left. After all was said and done this one guy remarked, "I wonder if he had the game on in his car, because if he didn't he's going to get home to a big surprise"

I heard them talking about this on ESPN radio yesterday and how they thought it was a problem for the NFL. The Saints-Vikings game was the most watched for the weekend, moreso than the media-darling New England Patriots which drew a 16.6.
I actually think that this is a good thing for the NFL. They are getting teams with smaller fan-bases (like Tennessee & Jacksonville) the opportunity to draw more national coverage, which should help those teams with merchandise sales and out-of-market fans for future seasons. I would be curious to see where players like Mariota and Fornette will rank in overall jersey sales next season.

The Childrens' Hospital in the Twin Cities is where my nephew gets treatment for seizures. Great facility and I'm sure the money will be put to good use.
