Richardson for sure. Pretty much every time ISU has played UNI since we started running the spread. They invite the QB to run on zone read and put a hit on him.

Yeah I figured that...I'll always feel a bit bad for Sam Richardson; I think there was talent there.

I remember SBR limping around in the 4th quarter of that game. Messingham kept calling zone read and the read was to keep it. If I remember right, SBR had around 20 carries and the highest RB had like 10.

Is there a team that didn’t beat of Richardson?

One thing I'll say about keeping Purdy in the pocket...Farley has long set a trap on the zone read vs ISU. He invites the QB to run and keys on the RB. Lets the QB get his 5-7 yards and puts a hit on him. By the end of the game, the QB is hobbling around. It's happened to so many QBs at ISU that I can't even remember them all. At the very least Campbell didn't fall for that trap.
That’s not a trap, it’s tackle football.
Given we were a lucky fumble from losing in 3OTs, I wouldn’t be confident that we avoided the trap.

I hope we start turning teams over again. It’s crazy that you hold a team to 1 yard per rush and outgain them by 200 yards and the game goes to triple OT.

Agree. Should have been more agressive on defense at the very least if they were only going to take what was given on offense. Send a few blitz looks but also keep the spy in place... send 4, spy with Vance. Speed up a young qb and don’t let him get comfortable running around, dumping it short or throwing it away. Def did it’s job but no big plays (scores, turnovers).

Something to consider is the numbers from this game that never felt in doubt two years ago. ISU even had 7 penalties.

Differences being ISU had two interceptions returned for TDs to start out with to help things.

Gave up 5.4 yards/rush!

I know it doesn't mean much but shows how much the perception changes.
I discussed this with some family and we said the same things. Looking back at that game, we had a pretty vanilla game plan as well. We also had some penalties, but they weren't drive killers. We had three interceptions in the first half and two were returned for TD's.

All we needed this past game was for one thing to go right for us or wrong for them on one of the drives and the game was going to be pretty much over. That didn't happen and the game was essentially a stalemate to the end.

That's how the front 7 played the entire game. Send 3/4 with Vance spying.

Sent three a lot with Vance spying. When they sent 4 they missed the tackles, had no spy and he escaped.

Look at the wvu game from a year ago. They were not nearly as multiple on def as they were in that game. My point is change it up confuse the true freshmen qb don’t let him get comfortable. They had hurries/sacks on less than 20% of drop backs... not enough pressure to create TOs.

My point is, big plays win games. Only big play of the day was a UNI fumble recovery for a TD. Should have changed something at half time to be more agressive, make more plays.

....however, one of the things that can't be cleaned up most likely is the play of our starting tackles. That is my biggest concern going into the Iowa game by far.
JGJ and Meeker just have not improved much in their time here and that is very frustrating. And on top of that, there hasn't been anyone good enough to beat them out, or the staff just won't play them if there are?
.....

This was my biggest concern going into the season when the talking heads where saying how good it was that we were returning all of our O-line.
I think the answer to your questions is we didn't have anyone good enough to beat out our starting two tackles in week one. We'll see how long that lasts.

It's a trap in that they invite the QB to run it. It was open all game, just like Farley always does. The one time Purdy ran it, he scored and it was called back. Now, I'm not going to say that it was a great decision to hold Purdy in the pocket all game...it almost came back to bite us. But, you have to be a little more strategic running the QB than Messingham and other OC's in the past have, even if it is going to gain yards.

I feel better about the result than I would have with a 7 point win in regulation and a banged up Purdy.

If Jones catches that ball on the 3rd and one on the first drive he may still be running. Looked upfield during the catch. Rest of the play looked good.
