Wow, sorry for using the wrong words on this site like source and insider

Let me try this again, rumblings in the Sooner nation are that boosters are getting fed up with this crap and want the administrators to make a move soon, they want the big 12 to work but the list of potential candidates to replace A&M is getting shorter and shorter. Don't forget A&M isn't the only school that is fed up with Texas and its ESPN brother, while T&M couldn't take the conference down by itself OU can....

I will try to work on my use of outlawed words on this site

It's funny how schools agree to a revenue model and then want to bail when someone else gets a better deal than they get.

Message to OU: Texas is bigger than you. They have more fans and more money and will generate more revenue. The beauty about this is that you still own Texas on the playing field. You agreed to the current format, stick to your word.

Conference expansion does not happen over night. As far as I'm concerned, the Big 12 is doing everything they can do right now to expand and get better. Get A&M out of here and take their money and then they can move on to expansion. BYU would be crazy to turn down the offer because this could be their last shot to play with the big boys. The sooner they realize they are not Notre Dame the better.

So OU doesn't hold all the cards??? Pretty sure that's the case in the big 9 right now...

Your post indicated they are leaving. That is a crap statement unless our expansion efforts implode. If we get a good team or 3 the B12 is very viable. That is what everyone (including OU) is working towards right now.

Chipster@redbloods has the scoop on the three new teams:
"Three new members will be soon added and are reproted to be Anonymous, To Be Named, and Maybe."

Well, if we pick up BYU, ND, and Pitt, we will be saved. We will have God on our side with the Catholics and Mormons in addition to the Baptists and UT Holy Rollers.

Is there a Jewish school that we could pick up to kind of help cover all of the bases?

Bingo... people need to keep in mind that reports have indicated that the OU president and AD are the two leaders who are coming up with the main ideas being followed for Big XII expansion. I find it hard to believe that the 2 guys leading the charge for Big XII expansion are secretly agreeing to join the Pac 12 and kill the Big XII.

I agree. In the end OU will do what is in it's best interest, and possibly leave the conference with emphasis on in the end.

I'm older so I'm not sure how many are aware, but those who are not should check out this Wikipedia entry on the OU president, David Boren:

David L. Boren - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Boren was a governor of Oklahoma and then a U.S. Senator, a centrist Democrat, until he retired on his own accord. He is highly accomplished and highly respected by his colleagues. He worked well across party lines, I don't know, but perhaps better than anyone else in the U.S. Senate:

"Sen. Barry Goldwater (R-AZ), who served with Sen. Boren, publicly stated that Boren should be elected President."

I'm not sure the same couldn't be said today.

Oklahoma is lucky to have someone like David Boren representing it's interests, and I believe the Big XII is as well. Again that is not to say the Big XII will survive all of this. But I believe Boren to be a man of high integrity who understands his fiduciary responsibilities, and who will do everything he can to bring about the outcome the 9 conference members say they want.

Again, check out that Wikipedia link if you want to know more about the man.

I love how this has to be explained every single day...

NIU doesn't give anybody the Chicago market because most people in Chicago couldn't even tell you where DeKalb IS, much less that there's a school named Northern Illinois University located there. Chicago only cares about Notre Dame and the Big 10, particularly Wisconsin, Illinois, and Northwestern (solely because it's located there). That's it. Bumping NIU up to BCS won't cause people to give a **** about either NIU or the Big 12. If the Big 12 truly wants Chicago market penetration they have to do the unthinkable and add ND or raid the Big 10, both of which are extremely unlikely.

See, what people who are just throwing names of schools out there don't get is presence in the market doesn't give you the market - people in the market have to care. It's the major reason why NIU or Memphis or (name your Texas school) to the Big 12 and Rutgers and/or Syracuse to the Big 10 is a bad idea - yeah, they're ideally located to a market that neither conference has acquired yet, however, adding that school in that market doesn't give the conference that market because nobody in that market CARES.

If the Big 12 is adding a Memphis or Houston or NIU, it's because Texas and Oklahoma left and the conference is in survival mode and a severely degraded level of relevance is deemed preferable to becoming extinct.

By the way, TCU doesn't give ANYBODY the Dallas market, especially not the Big 12, especially since it already owns it with Texas and OU. TCU is attractive to the Big East because of it's recent success and "opening" of Texas recruits to the Big East.

I agree with the general theme of your post. I've lived in Chicago for 11 years and went to our game @NIU so I feel I can comment with some accuracy on them. The Big Ten agrees with your post too because they added tiny population Nebraska when they could have chose massive markets instead.

Illinois and Northwestern don't even have the Chicago market. Iowa is a much bigger deal here, TWO new "Iowa" bars just started promoting themselves in my neighborhood alone, they have fricking billboards promoting themselves. ISU fans won't want to hear that, but the Hawkeyes own Chicago more than local teams do.

My take on the market:
1. Bears
2-100. Bears
101. Michigan
102. Ohio State
103. ND
104. Iowa (when Iowa is good they jump ND lately)
105. Wisconsin
106. Rest of B10 including the two Illinois schools
107. NIU

That said, I'll defend the people who bring up NIU to an extent. They are far more attractive than any of the other MAC schools. Their games are always on either 670 or WGN 720 radio, both stations completely dwarf any radio coverage that a Non-Texas team gets in the Big 12, especially 720. Usually about half of their games are televised on regular local TV in Chicago with no cable or dish needed.

They're a massive step down from an addition like BYU, but if people are considering Memphis they should consider NIU. For example NIU would easily be better than Colorado State that has been mentioned.

Don't forget SMU - We'd have the Methodists on our side, too!

I wouldn't mind NIU, plus it's drivable from Ames.

BYU Rumblings continue

Since the Aggies are gone I thought it would be good to start a new thread with information on the expansion of the conference....not your brainstorms but new information coming down the pike.

I'll start:

BYU board and their thoughts on the invite to the Big 12

BYU Future Affiliation Poll • BYU Football • CougarCorner

More rumblings about BYU and the Big 12:
http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/sports/52495048-77/byu-conference-officials-football.html.csp

"However, The Salt Lake Tribune has learned that BYU officials have had discussions with Big 12 officials within the past week regarding the school’s interest in joining the conference, and what conditions and assurances it would need to make the jump exactly a year after announcing they were breaking away from the Mountain West Conference.

It is unclear whether the talks have included an invitation from the Big 12.

A BYU source said the talks have included the school’s desire to utilize its own television network, BYUtv, in a BCS automatic-qualifying conference much as it plans to this year. The talks have also included ESPN officials and even some input from Notre Dame representatives, whom BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe has referred to as “partnersâ€￾ in the past year."

.

That is just it staying in the Big 12 is in OU's best interest. Texas and OU have the dream senario right now if they beat the other team they have the easiest path to the national title game every single year. It's like the old Big 10 for Michigan and tOSU. Why would they leave a place where almost every year their path to the national title game consists of them beating Texas and they are in.
