I think our bigs are better offensively, but worse defensively than last years group who had years in TJs system.

I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt as these are the first two games against real competition.

They’ll learn to play together. Difference this year is there is so much offensive talent they can overcome the poor defense. None of TJ’s other teams could do that.

The bigs the last few years had to be good at defense because they were almost liabilities on offense

I thought the play of the game was the offensive rebound by Heisie that led to the Keshon attempt that ended up being a Flagrant 1. Hiesie flew out of nowhere to keep the ball alive and ended up being a huge play.

That play and Heise hitting a key shot were the first two glimpses of how he can help this team win. We hadn’t seen much to this point but, like I said in my last post, these guys are playing their first high level basketball games together. And I don’t think Heise has ever played in a caliber of game like Monday’s. They aren’t robots and it takes some time for things to click and come together.

IMO Heise will just improve as season progresses. On TV it appears he is having to think his way through the game vs. just react. As ISU's approach becomes more intuitive his production should improve.

That said, I was very impressed by Nojus' effort in Dayton game. So minutes might be tough to get at the 2/3 spots if Jones & Gilbert approach 30mpg.

I love Nojus isn't afraid to take it hard to the basket.

That's what I'm noticing so far also. I don't know if that's necessarily a good thing. We have enough offensive talent with the 3 guards and Milan.

I guess if our offense ends up in the top 20 and defense falls into that 15-20 range it will even out.

That's who he is. There isn't a ton of 'just play' in his game. He was very obviously thinking through everything even when he was playing all the time late in his stint at UNI when he knew the system.

Plus, Iowa State's defensive system isn't much different than UNIs, just more length and better athletes playing it.

After last night's results... if it goes as it should tonight, we likely lost by 2 to the #2 ranked team on a neutral floor. Not bad when it was our first game against major competition

How about the Nojus flex after his 'and 1' play? Made me laugh out loud. It's fun watching a future star at the very beginning of his career.

Totally agree. Game goes from being tied with Dayton in possession to us up 4.

That's because Jones and Ward were able to switch on a perimeter player and Chatfield and Jackson aren't really capable of that at the moment
Jackson can’t which is why I think you see Chatfield out there as much as you do. Chatfield had a few plays last night where he played some good perimeter defense including some really good traps (one resulted in turnover and transition basket).
