Wow like everyone else - i've tried to put myself in his shoes and thats impossible to do....So i looked at the items that he spoke of that were most important...
National Championships, after looking over the rosters, and commits, to me, its easy to see what team has the best roster to contend.
North Carolina, if the national championship is the #1 priority, then it has to be North Carolina. They're 2008 and 2009 classes set up so awesome to have a sophomore and junior laden team with him being the key piece at small forward. They have athletes at all the positions except small forward, he could contend for a National Championship as a true freshman.
Duke - imo, while duke continues to recruit top tier rated guys, they're not recruiting the same type of athletes as north carolina or ku for that matter especially in the front court. Now i know Kyrie Irving is there, but, IMO from everything everyone has said, this kid is all business about his future, he will not let friendships muddy his decision, he will make the best decision for Harrison Barnes, and to me, thats not Duke. The team they're assembling will not be serious contenders for the national championship - recruiting the wrong horses.
ISU - boy if Harrison knew that Brackins would be back and so would Gilstrap, this team could contend for a national championship when he was a true freshman. But, the likelihood of that happening are less then Barnes committing to ISU in the first place.
It worries me a bit the he's making his decision so early, the only thing that weighs on his mind is ISU and how they looked last year!!!! This team could be so much more with the talent that has come in.....be interesting if he waited until spring to make the decision....i think the decision coming now means its more about the other schools then ISU. Now to add to this, maybe he's committing to ISU so early to help them recruit to get as good of a team around him as possible.
Some have called Harrison a momma's boy, in a good way. Being from a split family, with his father not involved in his life, his mother has fulfilled both roles, it only stands to reason that his bond with her is extremely tight. With that said, if he chose ISU then his mother would get to see him play in person for half of his college games, that has to be important to him considering their bond.
NOW - oddities that make us cyclone fans wonder....
1. Relationships - All recruits discuss their relationship with a coaching staff and how that impacted their decision. There can be no closer relationship then that of Harrison Barnes and Greg McDermott for obvious reasons.
2. Loyalty - Greg and ISU has helped Harrisons game develop, his ability for the past 3-4 years to play against ISU players has had a direct impact on his understanding of what it will take to compete at this level and the next. It reinforced his self motivation to be the best, and as a freshman and sophomore in high school he was able to compare his abilities against Div 1 players.
3. Why open it to the public if he's not choosing ISU? I understand the whole deal, but tell me, do you think theres a bunch of UNC and Duke supporters coming today? The reason for opening the doors is to allow locals to experience the event.....why bring a bunch of Ames Iowa and probably ISU fans into the gym only to pick UNC?
4. Why schedule it for a Friday that coincides with the ISU basketball opener? To me, he could have just as easily had this yesterday, but, maybe he wants it to be a continuation of the hoopla around the ISU BB program!!! He commits to ISU and then 3 hours later is sitting front row at Hilton watching the team that he will be leading next year.
5. ISU, DUKE OR UNC......At UNC or DUKE he will be another in the long long list of 5* kids....they get kids this highly ranked all the time - no big deal. Whereas at ISU, It would establish this program - wheres the bigger legacy? One of the many stars of UNC or Duke - OR establishing a program that other kids want to come to ISU and become the next Harrison Barnes what signifies LEGACY?????
6. If ISU is not at all in the running, why keep them on his list? He could have ended all this hoopla around him and ISU when he narrowed his list he could have kept it at 5 instead of 6.
To me, ISU is in the mix, i think his relationship with the McDermotts, several close friends on the team, and most importantly his mother. His mother and sister are not moving, he wants the most influential person in his life to be able to watch him in person - often. Therefore he picks ISU!!!!!
But if he don't and signs with UNC - i can completely understand why......
