I don't really think it had much to do with Jaz coming back and almost 100% due to Grill's injury.I love Jaz. He puts it all out there but when he came back from injury is when we lost our mojo. It’s a strange thing really.
Just another ray of sunshine from ZRFYou don't seem confused. "I know it looks ugly"...yup, I think you got it.
It looks ugly because it IS ugly. Despite facing it numerous times over a several game stretch, players either don't seem to know what to do or don't appear confident enough to do it. It's akin to a hot player nailing several contested/poor shots in a game versus taking several good ones because they are cold. Which do you think is more predictive of future success, the same player taking good shots or the taking questionable ones due to randomly being hot? Basically our press breaking, while technically 'effective' was a disaster and If they continue to do what they did yesterday it will be a problem at the NCAAs.
It would be nice for the team to look mentally prepared for the press and handle the execution more crisply. From Lipsey not lobbing shakey pass, from Jaz not looking petrified to take a few dribbles, to half the team taking 2-3 seconds the opponent is pressing, the execution and awareness was lacking. If I saw it, and you saw it, I guarantee our next several opponents saw the same thing.
The other part of struggling to break it is that it slows down our offense. We got lucky on several possessions where we took 7 ish seconds to get the ball past half court, then fell into our 2nd half habit of passing around the perimeter. On twob posseasions that come to mind Lipsey got fouled late in the shot clock, while Holmes had a nice drive with 1-2 seconds. Again, great result, but typically, when those same things happen, we struggle to get quality shots. I think breaking it more successfully and have more movement, being entry passes or drives earlier n the shot clock will be keys to advancing these next few weeks.
Really other than the press (shaky), Jaz (ineffective outside of defense), and some defensive sagging that led to some open threes, we played extremely well. Guys played within themselves (Jones), Kalscheur was money, Lipsey was outstanding, shot selection was pretty good, and the rebounding tenacity/effort was one for the ages.
Something else that stuck out to me was Watson. He is improving his defensive awareness and has the makings to be our best defender next year. His athleticism, footwork, and lanky frame make him an effective one on one defender. He's just missing a little bit of awareness (spacing) as he's been cleaner (less cheap fouls) in recent games. Probably my early pick to make a big jump next year.

I think it was a combination of things, including not seeing many minutes from Watson any more.I love Jaz. He puts it all out there but when he came back from injury is when we lost our mojo. It’s a strange thing really.
Obviously not fun when it's our opponent, but that Bridges rebound-slam admittedly was a wowser.
My philosophy is if you don't want your posts to get dumb ratings, don't post dumb posts. It's not that hard.

And for the record I put a positive rating on far, far more posts than I give a negative rating. But I'm sure @ZRF generally gets more of the negative ratings. I wonder why that is? It couldn't have anything to do with the **** posting he regularly engages in, could it?
Always been a heady player.Jaz gets hit in the face more than any player I've ever seen
He's also a total pest on defense. He gets in people's heads, they get frustrated and they try to make a point with an elbow. I don't think that is what happened yesterday but I do think it happens a lot. Tough defense and taking charges frustrates players who are used to getting whatever they want.Always been a heady player.
Sometimes when I read your posts, I wonder if we watched the same game. Sometimes I wonder if you've ever watched any college basketball game! You don't seem confused. "I know it looks ugly"...yup, I think you got it.
Your first mistake was reading them, when they largely suck balls.Sometimes when I read your posts, I wonder if we watched the same game. Sometimes I wonder if you've ever watched any college basketball game!
This team is not the undefeated 1975-76 Indiana Hoosiers. Most of understand that this Cyclone team is flawed. You type multiple paragraphs describing their shortcomings, then end with something like, "but they played great today."
That's dumb and it's why you get dumbed.
FYI, I gave you a like emoji sometime recently. I don't remember what is was for, but post more stuff like that.

After reading your posts and knowing that the rest of CF knows how you post, I will wear your opinion of me as an idiot as a badge of honor. You are ultra-critical of the team as well and while they have flaws, they are pretty darned good so...You aren't one of the 5 or so people I was talking about anyway. Those idiots know who they are so there is no reason to point them out.
FWIW, I don't compare this team to other teams rather to "the best realistic version of itself" that it has shown it can be. That's also not about relative perfection, rather doing those things, which it's shown it can do, within an "acceptable" margin of error. The most 'correctable' and pressing concerns I saw were how we handled the press, sagging too far off corner shooters, and offensive stagnation toward the end. The latter refers to the lack of movement which, when done consistently, often has lead to poor shot selection.
Like I also said there was a lot (and more) to like from yesterday. Gabe was great, Lipsey was great, Tre was better around the rim, Rob played well (outside the time he tried driving from the 3 point line..something he should never do), FT shooting was good, defensive effort was good, first half ball movement was excellent, and (wouldn't you know) we have had two games in a row without collapsing.
I like our chances today. I don't expect the same level of success on the boards but if we have the same effort that will bode well. I do think the sagging and over-helping will be problematic if **** and Harris keep playing at the level they have been. We shall see soon enough.
