What is his skill set that's D1 level ready?
To me he would do a lot better in a system that pushed the pace more. He is a rim running 4 in my opinion, who should also be an adept rebounder due to his level of athleticism. Other than that, not much. His offensive game is very unrefined, which we all kind of knew and expected so no surprises there. I think the tools are there to be an elite defender, but he seems to be struggling a bit to pick up the scheme.

I understand that but I can't believe someone would base expectations on analytics this early in the season especially with the schedule we've played. That simply doesn't make sense to me. Right now, I don't know what to expect and anything more than that is just a guess which is what message boards are for and I understand that. No biggie, it's just a little pet peeve of mine.
I hear what you're saying too, but this early in the season those analytics are all we have to go off of. Especially prior to feast week when so many teams (like ISU) are playing real opponents for the first time. It was a reality check for me at least, personally. Prior to the season, before seeing even one minute of Cyclone basketball, I was confident in TJ getting the on paper talent back to the NCAA Tournament. Had no idea how high of a seed, optimistically maybe a 5. Expectations ramped up a bit for me due to how soundly they were laying the hammer down on these sub 300 kenpom teams, which went hand in hand with media types like CW floating 3 seed out into the airwaves. I'm not blaming CW solely for anything regarding my personal expectations, but I am certainly stepping back and taking a new perspective on this years Cyclone team and its potential.

If they just hit shots we're still undefeated. Idk why we always seem to have these droughts?

It feels like the Eustachy era to me. These guys get beat up in practice and the focus is on being gritty, tough, and playing defense. They don't seem to actually practice shooting, free throws, or any other offensive drills very much.

I'm baffled that D1 players in the current era can't hit threes or finish at the rim.

I know it's different in a game but can basic shooting form be a high enough bar?

We always seem to miss more bunnies than most teams. Long as I can remember.

The 3's I can forgive to a point but not bunnies and free throws.

Very encouraging. He addressed all the issues very soundly. I really like how he talked about being more patient on offense instead of guys trying to play hero ball.
We played way too loose and undisciplined on offense, and that was my biggest disappointment of the tournament. Gilbert can't go into the lane without a plan. Players are way too strong, long, and skilled at this level to get away with dribbling into a set defense. Lipsey can't keep making one handed passes across the court.

If we can't make shots, we have to be more methodical on offense and wear teams down. I love ISU basketball, but I had a really tough time watching us last weekend. I don't question the effort, but the skill level and fundamentals were not NCAA worthy.

CW I believe said ISU is a three seed.

On this week's cast they were saying last week might be a drop in seed.

We'll see how things go (Omaha figuring it out, guys sticking to the plan, and Tre and Ward healthy should help) but a 16-0 run is still a 16-0 run.
CW was still talking 4 and 5 on this week's pod! From what I've seen, we should be talking in/out of the tournament.

Yeah I'm not trying to write them off but unless I'm missing something I'm just not seeing how sustainable this group is vs. prototypical P6 teams.

Since the Miami loss TJ is only 3-7 against Power 5 opponents outside the Big 12. I'm expecting a loss to either Iowa or DePaul.

I'm guessing Iowa wins next week on free throws alone.

If ISU doesn't shore up enough to get DePaul...yikes.

I posted that I had them like a 4-6 seed going into the tourney and after that performance I'm now on the 8-10 area. If they show improvement and look good against DePaul and Iowa I will feel a little better about it but I need to see it against a good team.

@IASTATE07

Not sure what's so funny but here's the last year or so against Power 5 teams not in the Big 12. If this trend of playing horribly against teams like this holds we'll likely split the next 2.

Miami(N)- L
North Carolina (N)- W
Villanova(N) -W
Uconn (N) - L
@ Iowa -L
St. Johns- W
@ Missouri- L
Pitt(N) - L
Virginia Tech (N)- L
Texas A&M (N) - L

6 out of those 7 losses have really been non-competitive also.

It's funny because you can manipulate the data to fit what narrative you want.

What narrative? I'm simply pointing out how bad we've been against Power 5 teams lately, especially on the road where the DePaul game takes place tommorrow.

I wouldn't look past them even if they are 1-5.

You could have included the wins against LSU and Wisconsin that were a week before the Miami loss, but you chose to include data from two seasons ago like it has any relevance to this year's team

We beat LSU who had an interim coach and was over-seeded. The Wisconsin win was really solid.

It does have relevance becuase TJ has been the coach for all of these losses and we just saw a 2 game sample size a week ago of how this team could struggle against Iowa and DePaul.

that is pathetic, we really have to get better at non conference competition.

Well you are an Iowa fan so I'm not exactly sure what your issue is.
