Gotta love the English language. :D

It's the lawyers fault!

Lawyers Love Their Words

Like most confusing parts of our modern life, it all started with lawyers. “For all intents and purposes” comes from the 16th-century English legal phrase “to all intents, constructions, and purposes.” It means “in every functional purpose” and helps lawyers cover their bases in legal agreements.
I always roll my eyes at people who grammar Nazi the English language (in this particular cases I find it funny). I speak 3 languages and I'm working on my 4th. Let me tell you, the English language is really, really difficult by comparison to most other languages. Spelling, grammar, verb conjugation, slang, etc. It's really difficult even for native speakers.

Our prior kickoff didn't reach the end zone, so maybe it was the wind, but I think they knew a touchback wasn't likely, so a short, high kick should be easier to cover. He just didn't kick it high enough. Plus we didn't cover well. A bad combination that could have cost us if they had a QB who can throw it 55 yards.
I can throw a 50 yard pass and I was a lineman. McNamara is just not good.

At risk of sounding like the "grumpy nitpicking guy after a win"-- I hate squib kicks. I just don't understand the concept behind them. You still have their primary return guy fielding the ball, just 25 yards further up than he otherwise would have. With 6 seconds left on the clock, it allows them to get to midfield within that timeframe, whereas if you kick it deep and they return it to the 50 time will have expired. I also am not sure there is less risk in a squib kick return as opposed to having a touchback and starting at the 25 with 6 seconds to play.

Just seemed riskier than it needed to be but hey, what do I know.
Their primary return guy did not field the ball.

How could someone so personable go to the Iowa and play for a dull coach like Freerents?

Looks like Kittle had no other Power 5 offers. (shrug)

And I'm not part of the grammar police, I just thought it funny, and a phrase I have had trouble with in the past.

Good for you on the 3-4 languages. That's not easy to do. And you are right, the English language is not an easy language, all the more difficult for foreigners to pick up, I would imagine.

Do you have a gift with languages, a hobby, or part of your work perhaps (with your CIA training, yes)?

Interesting that this site can air the replay so quickly after the game.

Cyclone.tv can't show the replay until 3 days (I think) after the first tier broadcast.
I'm not sure cyclones.tv can show this game at all since it was on the Big 10 TV package. I'm not 100% sure on that though.
Interesting. I'll try to save this post and get back with you on Tues, or so. We'll see if it is up on cyclone.tv then.
I did save this post. I checked on Tues., and it still wasn't up. But finally after 4 days, Wed/today, it is up on cyclone.tv.

Was this for me?
Yes, my bad. I forgot to quote your post #3282.

That's what someone in the CIA linguistics dept would say ;)
Linguistics is different than learning a language though. Linguistics is more about why things are said the way they are and how they've changed. The lineage and origins of certain things or the laziness of the human mind to make things easier to say.... I don't think I'm making a better case for not being a spy...

The problem with this is that in terms of value, all that other viewing is fairly worthless.

Advertisers care mostly about if their ads are being watched. That's why they love live sports- most people watch them live and the commercials can't be skipped. People watching it delayed (and skipping commercials) or catching clips (no commercials) are essentially worthless to them.
Expect to see that change with less consumption advertising; more scrolling ads, more visual overlay ads, more targeted interactive ads, etc.

Kittle might be the only Hawk that I've ever liked.

Repeating but I don't even remember Kittle at Iowa and either way generally there's not as much riff raff out of their football players that I've noticed.

Their basketball team on the other hand is known more for how cheap and dirty they are than their actual play on the court.

Kittle is a great TE in the NFL but he put up little stats in college. For context, Charlie Kolar had more reception yards his senior year than Kittle had in his entire career. That's not meant to slight Kittle either, it mostly goes to show the utilization of Kittle as Charlie had 128 more receptions than him.

I've always argued they can't call themselves TEU if freaking George Kittle was that underutilized in college.
