A couple comments:

1. I liked the play calling. It seemed like we kept U of I on their heals, but then we'd just turn it over.

2. The secondary was awful. Watching announcers on national television mocking ISU as they replay two ISU defenders tripping over each other while the receiver waltzes into the endzone is embarassing. A good quarterback would have thrown 7 or 8 TDs today.

Exactly on both accounts. I thought the playcalling was stellar. I thought the onside kick was a little premature however. Execution killed us again.

We made Wegher look like a pro. This dissapointed me.

IMO the game turned on the onside kick. You score first get the mo and give it right to the other team.

I don't think that Iowa is a good team and think that they will be lucky to win 6 games this year. Iowa State needed to keep momentum going and I would say that the onside kick pretty much killed it. If you hand the ball over to a D III team like we did it would be hard to win. The defense played a great game and really stepped up when the offense left them out to dry time and time again. The D was flat at the end of the game but who could blame them? Seems like the refs didn't give Iowa State an inch but called TDs for Iowa when a blind man could see that they were half a yard out. I don't understand why they kept trying to throw the ball into tripple coverage when the running game was cranking. I am more than frustrated at a game that should have been close. Do we really need to pay someone a couple of million dollars a year to make these calls!?

Few things:
1. Every Iowa fan I met today was an idiot. I try to cut them a break a lot but come on.
2. Arnaud will never be a decent QB unless he stops choosing a WR to throw to before the play happens.
3. This is the worst Iowa State team since the 90's.

While I think it's a little too early for the onside kick, we will need some trickery and agressive playcalling because we don't have the talent to win strength against strength.

Is there any unit that is more overrated by its fans than the ISU receiving corps? Pretty much on an annual basis too. Course the QB was worse today.

This offense is a lot less imaginative than I was expecting. I think our personnel might be better suited for a run first offense.

Agree - can't become a quick, fast, throw-happy team overnight.

The announcers made me want to puke more than once. Didn't know our players (past or present), and called KF "more than just a coach, he's a shaper of men". Just, wow.

But announcing wasn't the problem; our execution was. Huge penalties, turnovers and horrendous offensive play made this so much worse than it should have been. I expected a close game with some bad stretches, but I am still a little shocked by how bad things went.

Best thing is, this was one game, in non-conference, and the one we were least likely to win. If we correct the problems, then next week is still winnable and the rest of the season can still be a decent one.

Yes, congratulatoins to the Hawks. They certainly deserved to win that one.

6 Turnovers
80 yds of penalties

Those numbers won't win a lot of games.

Defense actually played pretty well. Weak side MUCH improved. I thought Garrin and Lyle were great. Sims is a player.

Forget cannon arm, the #1 qualification to play QB is "makes good decisions".

Looking at this game, someone who did not know us would say our defense is our strength. Ironic, no?

Turning point of the game was the onside kick.

3 yrs without a TD against these guys.

I don't remember seeing a lot of our guys open today.

OK, need to put this behind us and move on. Need to avoid a let-down next week and give it all we have. It will be tough.

Anybody hurt?

I am but a good cry should solve that.

We are at the "next level" thanks to J. P. Jamie has chipped his teeth with all his coaching changes and we are going to pay a price. AA has had to adjust to three different offensive schemes--AA is not to blame. Coach Rhodes is trying to run his system with players recruited by two different prior coaches. We were once at the same level as the Hawks. In the last three or four years the Hawks sports programs have improved while the Cyclone sports programs head to Pollard's "next level". It will be interesting to see how AA reacts to being pulled by Coach Rhodes.

That is exactly the message that onside kick conveyed to both teams. ISU is not good enough to play straight up. I hate that message.

I don't think ISU is as bad as they played today. But they seriously need to get their crap together before next weekend when they head out to K St because a loss their would be deflating. If we can learn from this, get AA goin and keep steppin up on D we can still get into conference play ay 3-1 with a chance to beat K St, Colorado and maybe someone else.

Gotta keep our heads up

The silver lining is I see a lot of fixable mistakes(penalties, bad decisions) and despite the score our defense held up relatively well, your going give up points constantly starting at midfield.
100% agree with this.... What I did not see (until toward the end when our D was worn out) was us getting outplayed by Iowa physically. I think we can overcome the mistakes made from this one.

I think most are being too nice. Call it how it is. This is completely unacceptable. For the money paid to the coaches, to the money spent by donors and fans, the product on the field from top to bottom is ridiculous.
The coaching, playing, play calling, fundamentals, game plan, effort for this game was not even junior college caliber.

Please. Call it how it really is. We did not have to win the game. This is not the issue. The truth is there has been too much time and money spent by all involved to allow this type of performance. Disgusting!

My first time to see us play thanks to Fox Sports Houston. A few observations:

+ We were tremendously sloppy...way too many penalties.
+ Arnaud tried to force it into double coverage just about every time he threw it...as sad as it is to say, he was lucky to have thrown only 4 interceptions today.
+ Arnaud did a nice job running the ball...I think we need him to run it more.
+ Both LJ and Sims are quality players...I like what I see in them.
+ Reynolds needs to get his rear end up field and quit dancing around when he gets the ball.
+ We had a lot of guys slipping...it's our home turf...you would think they would have the appropriate length cleats on.
+ Robinson had some very nice runs...he looked pretty solid overall.
+ It appeared from the TV that our crowd was totally deflated when Iowa went up 14-3.
+ The fourth quarter was pathetic...we either gave up and mailed it in or we need to be in better condition...either way it was not good.
+ Very disappointing game. Teams usually make big strides between week 1 and week 2...we did not appear to do that.
+ At least back in the day we had basketball to look forward to but after the last three years I'm not sure how many eggs we can put in that basket.
+ Oh yeah, for all of you that love the names on the backs of the jerseys...should we require these guys with the real long hair that totally covers their name to cut their hair? Without a haircut there is no way to know who they are!

Rick, I'm going to quibble with you a little.

Banks is not that bad. He was pretty tight on coverage most of the time. That TD to DJK was offensive interference. DJK put both hands on Bank's clear face visor and pushed off hard before he caught the ball. Pushing off is interference. Moeakio did it several times last year. I assume the refs are just not calling it. I haven't seen it called in a long time anywhere.

Our running game waas pretty effective, when we review the stats, I think we are going to find we ave 5 or more yds per carry. Our O line, again did a good job. Aside from the TO's, problems were

1) QB decisions and execution
2) Penalties
3) High risk strategy putting the game at risk early (onside kick)

2 & 3 are easily fixable. 1 is a problem if it continues. I miss not being at the game, it's hard to see if we have guys open on TV. Did Franklin play? How can you NOT throw to a 6'6" guy in 60 minutes of play? THERE is a guy you should be able to throw to even if he IS covered.

In summary, I was very encouraged by the fundamental play of almost all of our players - especially the Defense. I was discouraged by the TO's and penalties.
