Isnt he paid less than Chizik was?
He is. This does not make him worth the amount.

Well I am definitely not here to gloat because honestly I thought you guys were going to beat us by two scores after last week.

I agree. Fundamentals need to be the #1 focus of the coaching staff. These are good kids and they want to learn but either they are not absorbing what they are being taught, or the coaching staff is not teaching.
Forget about wins right now and for the entire year. In fact forget about the score for the entire season. Try to get all positions to know their footwork, correct coverage, body position, how to read each side of the ball, etc. etc. And if a player doesn't react to what is being taught, sit him down for a series and give another guy a chance.
This is what JP has backed this program into so there really is no other choice.
First, I'll take Rhodes over Chizik any day.
Second, I can only remember one important drop from the receivers. The problem was that we constantly were thowing the ball when we should have been running it... and we threw into tripple coverage over and over.
Third, the play calling was horrible in my humble opinion. I keep thinking about the drive when I think it was 7-3 when we passed for a three and out when our running game was looking great. Seemed like we were trying to force a passing game that never materialized.
Four, I must be on some major coolaide because I still think that Iowa State is a better team than Iowa.... or at least could be with the right disipline and play calling.
Five, The D really was up to play. Maybe next week they can spend some time preparing the offense?
Six, I'm going to go on record to say that we win 6 games this year. Why not? We had enough penalties and turnovers today to cover the rest of the season. I must say that I picked us to win 3 last year and none the year before...
Seven, its a joke how overpaid Rhodes obviously is... However, at least he wants to be there. Chizik on the other hand....
What game were you watching? Our OL averages 330 and when we chose to run the ball we were successful. The trickery crap is what cost us the game. Passing on third and short was probably the most irritating thing other than AA's poor decision making. While I think it's a little too early for the onside kick, we will need some trickery and agressive playcalling because we don't have the talent to win strength against strength.
1) We were capable of winning this game today. I agree the onside kick attempt was premature, but ballsy. I like the idea, but I would have felt more comfortable with it coming after a touchdown. At least if the risk didn't work, then at worst we would have been tied. It's a lot like the 4th and 1 call that Jim Tressel gambled on last week.
2) In training Austin to pass first, run second (similar to OSU's Terrell Pryor), he tends to miss opportunities to run. I think he capitalized on those opportunities more today than NDST, however he has a HUGE problem of starring down his receivers. As many have commented, he continues to try and do too much. That tells me he needs to mature and trust his teammates.
3) When the defense is running a 4-5-2 most of the game, I think we should have run the ball earlier and more often.
4) I was very happy to see our line play improve today. Did you notice how Iowa didn't have the confidence in their typical strategy of run to set up the pass? They gained more yards after the game was well out of reach and our defense was tired.
5) The refs didn't beat us today. We made huge mistakes and Iowa played smart and capitalized. Iowa didn't have to take any risks today. They were very well coached today.
6) I was the most disappointed with our lack of discipline. After a stellar performance in the penalty department last week, this was a team that played out of control at times.
7) The early penalties and turnovers took us out of this game.
8) Reynolds needs to finish blocks, stop trying to be Mr. Flash and just play football.
9) For those who can't get past the realities of our football program and are looking for any reason to fire a coach or AD. Grow up. This is the second game for a team that hasn't had a lot of stability. No matter what organizations you look at, those that succeed long term have leadership that stays together for a period of time. U of Iowa has that stability, as well as other programs you see (football: Ohio State, USC, Texas, Oklahoma; basketball: UNC, Duke, U Conn, etc.) Assuming we can have patience and invest in Paul Rhoads like we did for McCarney, I think we will see a lot of success. Not only over Iowa, but in conference and bowl wins.
8) Reynolds needs to finish blocks, stop trying to be Mr. Flash and just play football.
Well, Iowa certainly imposed their will all the way to the end. Quite a setback for ISU after last weeks game. The only team ISU beat today were themselves. Greener pastures ahead, I hope. We will get it together! I don't want to see any www.firePaulRhoads.com threads! He will get the job done, just give him and his staff some time, and he will prevail in the not to distant future. We'll police ourselves up, and go back to the drawing board. We will win! We will get better! As ever, Go Cyclones!
I personally don't think that they should pay the coaches more than they pay professors at government schools. Forget about how much money the program makes. If all teams are subject to the same rules the university will do just as well. However, for two million dollars a year I think that its not crazy to expect some better decisions.
