[h=1]Statement from President Leath regarding April 9 Campustown incident[/h]
Posted 30 minutes ago
"I was immediately made aware of the situation that began in Campustown shortly before midnight, and have continued to receive information over the past few hours from police and other staff. We are all distraught and disappointed over the events that have unfolded near campus overnight. I can confirm that one of our students has been seriously injured and his condition is unknown at this hour. Student Affairs staff have reached out to the family. At this time, I ask everyone to keep this student in your thoughts and prayers.

My senior cabinet will convene first thing in the morning to assess this situation and evaluate options for the remainder of our official Veishea activities planned for this week.

Additional information will be posted on the Iowa State homepage at www.iastate.edu as soon as it is available."
President Steven Leath

So I figured I'd chime in since I am a current student and I watched the riot.

1. They were not using tear gas, it was fireworks.
2. The kid's head was cracked open and I talked to a cop they do not know his condition but they think he is still alive.
3. Drunk boobs everywhere.
4. Some fights broke out over girls.
5. The riot started on hunt street where a giant party was broken up and walked to welch, where they went to Stanton after. They proceeded to charge the cops and go to Lincoln, after hanging out on Lincoln they went back to welch.
6. Tons of rumors I've heard but I don't want to release them since I don't want to spread false info.

all I know is all the freshman cheering that they get 3 more years of this are incorrect, say goodbye to veishea. I may post more tomorrow if I heard some info.

For real, this is.. the exact description of the 04 riot. If thats what happened, it seems like the police didnt learn that breaking up a large party (in the exact same area) and having it funnel down to welch isnt the greatest of ideas. That doesnt excuse the actions of some idiots, but there were lessons that should have been learned the last time.

Yeah, it really does sound like they haven't learned from their mistakes in 2004 at all. Don't get me wrong, I'm not condoning anything stupid that kids are doing...they should've learned not to funnel a gas fire towards a powder keg though.

Yea I was at that Hunt Street party and we pretty much just got pushed/funneled to Welch by all the cops hanging around.

Personally I hope I don't get in one of these videos and kind of like a wrong place wrong time thing being a bystander.

I hope you are ok too. The biggest difference between the 2004 riot and this years is everyone has a camera on their phone and recorded everything. You are going to be seeing a lot of arrests still to come from last night.

Yea I was literally right next to the first car flipping with everyone chanting around us. I tried to look as bystanderish as possible after I noticed barely didn't have their phone out. I was then on street corners watching from then on out

Problem is that the stupid idiots want to live up to the past riots. Unfortunately, they want rioting to be a tradition. Then all the onlookers that won't leave the area because they want to tell people they were there, only makes it worse, they are just as dumb for encouraging things. I hope they get tons of video and file charges on anyone and everyone.

That's not what I said. I meant they should have routed the students somewhere away from Welch.

I gotcha. I just tire of hearing the "easy" excuse some (not you necessarily) use to justify mob behavior.

Like those dopes shown on the paper.....if they get a sanction by the school (or others do, like kicked out), I don't want to hear how their future is ruined as they were "just being kids having fun
As others have said, videos, phone cameras, twitter make it ALOT easier to document this behavior and prosecute.
